Discover Očihov: Village Culture, the Blšanka and Cycling Route

Očihov combines remarkable village architecture with the landscape of the Blšanka and specific opportunities for cyclists and anglers. In the village, a church protected since 1964, a Baroque chapel and archaeological traces from various periods come together. This allows you to shape your stay in Očihov around architectural history, waterscapes and regional exploration. Architecture, river landscape, fishing waters and cycling connections stand side by side, offering different ways to experience the village.

St. Martin on the Banks of the Blšanka

The subsidiary Church of St. Martin stands on the eastern edge of Očihov, on the left bank of the Blšanka. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. Its architectural form features a narrower polygonal presbytery adjoining the irregularly rectangular nave. A prismatic tower rises in the western gable area of the nave; a stair extension is located on its northern side. The location, floor plan, tower and stair extension can therefore be viewed as interconnected structural elements.

Village Square and Traces of Earlier Settlements

The village square is home to an originally Baroque chapel in the form of a two-storey prism. Its present appearance was created by a reconstruction in 1900. Prehistoric and early medieval settlement traces have also been archaeologically documented in the built-up area and immediate surroundings of Očihov. A walk through the village thus combines visible architecture with a history reaching much further back. The chapel and settlement traces represent two different time scales: the reconstruction of 1900 and the much older settlement.

The Blšanka, Fishing Grounds and Mineral Water

The Blšanka floodplain is a significant landscape feature, accompanied by a band of tall vegetation. The 7.2-hectare Očihovská in the Očihov cadastral area belongs to the Blšanka 2 B fishing grounds; fishing is permitted there. If you are interested in the area's distinctive natural features, the BJ 11 spring is also worth noting, as it is officially recognised as a natural mineral water spring. Mineral water has been found in three wells in the municipality of Očihov. The figure of 7.2 hectares provides a concrete indication of the size of the fishing waters for planning purposes.

Cycling Route and Local Tradition

The CT 3151 regional cycling route runs through Očihov and Očihovec. Mostly rideable field and forest paths are planned for the regional cycling route. The route therefore provides a clear starting point for planning your outings, without limiting your experience of the village to its landscape alone. For a cycling trip, it is also relevant that the route passes through both villages and that rideable paths are planned. A further cultural date is provided by Martinské posvícení: it was celebrated in Očihov on 9 November 2013 and was scheduled for 16 November 2024.
