Libočany: Church Art, History and Trails

Libočany combines impressive church art, preserved historic monuments and paths through a protected landscape. The town thus offers different ways to explore its history: from its medieval origins and Baroque architecture to a cycle route and a marked connection for pedestrians and cyclists.

The All Saints Church and Its Special Interior

The single-nave All Saints Church, with its two-tower west façade and richly decorated exterior, stands at the centre of the town’s cultural history. The vaults are covered with frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of the saints by J. V. Tschopper. The building itself is also remarkable: it was constructed from roughly hewn sandstone blocks. These are laid in regular horizontal courses and separated from one another by a narrow intermediate layer of red sandstone.

The interior includes an organ with two manuals and thirteen stops. It is considered the first known organ design with five cases in the Czech Republic. The church is therefore interesting not only for its façade and frescoes, but also for this unusual element of Czech organ history.

Historical Traces in the Town

The earliest records of Libočany date from 1226. At that time, the town belonged to the Doksany Monastery estate. Later evidence leads through various periods: the Libočany Cultural Centre was ceremonially opened on 7 July 1928 and built on the foundations of former brewery cellars. The old granary, known as the Špýchar, dates from 1602. As a Baroque granary, it is a stone building with a Baroque gable and still serves its original purpose today. A historic forge dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Several notable figures are also associated with Libočany. Václav Hájek z Libočan was born here, while the music publisher E. Wetzler came from Libočany. The writer and first Czech female senator Božena Viková-Kunětická (1862–1934) spent the last twelve years of her life in Libočany.

Nature and Trails Around Libočany

The Zlatník hill, a botanically valuable site, lies in the immediate vicinity. The Liboc floodplain landscape, which provides a habitat for protected animals and plants, is also nearby. Cyclists can take the 54.2-kilometre, easy Podbořany–Žatec–Podbořany cycle route. It passes through Libočany and is suitable for road bikes and trekking bikes. In addition, a blue-marked tourist route for pedestrians and cyclists leads from Žatec to Libočany.

Important Information for Visitors

The Libočany Museum is closed in 2026. Libočany Château is not open to the public. As part of the Hájkovo pochod, it was opened to the public once a year. These different access details are relevant when planning a specific visit and help distinguish freely accessible local history from special openings limited to particular times.
