Koštice tells its story in village squares and along the river: a late Baroque church, a historic mill, public art and an educational trail along the Ohře each offer a different perspective. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on religious buildings and local history or on the riverside route.

Church, Village Squares and Art

The parish church of Saint Anthony of Padua stands in the middle of the village square. The late Baroque religious building dates from 1752; the church is also listed as an immovable cultural monument and classified as an example of 18th-century Baroque. This combination of a specific construction date and a broader art-historical classification makes it a distinctive part of the village’s history.

The Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1729, stands in the lower village square. The modern abstract sculpture Život – Letniceoffers a different artistic form: woodcarver Jan Švadlenka created it in 2013 from a dead tree. The church, statue and sculpture thus offer insights into different periods and forms of expression, showing that Koštice’s cultural attractions are not limited to a single era.

Ortův Mlýn: Mill History and Hydropower

Ortův Mlýn combines a historical distinction with a present-day function: the mill is considered the first automatic mill in Bohemia and is now a hydropower plant. Its current location on the Ohře is documented in a written reference from 1574. The year refers to the mention of the location, not to the start of its current use.

The former power station at Ortův Mlýn is also part of its history. It once supplied electricity to the mill, street lighting throughout Koštice and households. The site can therefore be considered not only for its architecture, but also for the mill’s former role in the local energy supply.

The Koštice–Křesín Educational Trail

The short Koštice–Křesín educational trail was established in 2012. It starts at the church, passes through the lower village square and follows the Ohře through Želevice and the wetlands near Koštice. It ends in Křesín. The route as described connects several specific points of interest: the central religious building, a village square, the river and the wetlands.

This route offers a different perspective on the attractions mentioned above than a walk focused solely on buildings and artworks. If you are interested in the riverside landscape, you can make the educational trail part of your trip planning. No information about walking time or difficulty is provided.

Nature and Cycling

The Koštice Natural Monument is home to the largest population by number of individuals of black sedge (Carex melanostachya) in Bohemia. Subhalophytic plant communities occur in the Koštice Natural Monument. It also has waterlogged and open areas of flooded meadows.

Lávka svobody is also of interest to cyclists: the simple bridge carries pedestrians and cyclists over the small mill race. Karfíkův dvůr offers bicycle rental with tourist equipment, including child seats and bicycle trailers for children. It is open by prior arrangement. If this service is important to your plans, arrange your visit in advance.

Chapels and Remembrance by the River

Two buildings near the ferry crossing also tell of different periods in the village’s history. The neo-Gothic-Baroque chapel Kaplička u přívozu was built in 1846 by the Zinke family of house No. 14. Zvonička u přívozu was built in January 2014 in memory of the mass drowning of 1764, when people drowned while crossing a river on their way back from a church service. The memorial thus commemorates a specific event; its name does not imply that a ferry service operates today.

Consider whether you would like to associate Koštice mainly with its churches, artworks and mill history, or whether the educational trail and botanical features better match your travel interests. This will help you focus your search for a suitable base on the topics you actually want to explore.
