Horní Břečkov – Natural Landscape and Historical Heritage

Horní Břečkov combines a distinctive landscape with noteworthy cultural and historical heritage. The village lies on the edge of Podyjí National Park and on the right bank of the Březinka stream.

Podyjí National Park: Rocks, Meanders and Forest Steppes

Podyjí National Park is characterized by a diverse landscape. Its characteristic formations include rock amphitheaters, steep walls and meanders. These are complemented by extensive scree fields and hard-to-reach gorges, which give the area a particularly distinctive landscape character. Along the Dyje River lie floodplain meadows, while sunny forest steppes are characterized by diverse stands of thermophilous plants.

The Church of Saint Clement

A central cultural and historical landmark of the village is the Church of Saint Clement. It is considered one of the twelve oldest churches in South Moravia and has a Romanesque core. The building is longitudinal and single-naved; a four-sided tower stands on its west side.

Other sacred monuments also complement the picture. In Čížov stands a Marian chapel dating from 1787. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows has a side façade framed by pilasters and featuring three window axes. On the outskirts of Horní Břečkov there is also an unusually designed wayside shrine from the 19th century. It is regarded as a valuable element of the historic settlement and cultural landscape. Together, these buildings are not merely a list of sights, but offer different insights into religious architecture and the places’ evolving history.

Vistas and Places of Remembrance

A viewpoint on the Czech side of the road to the border crossing offers a view of Hardegg and is located above the more than 120-meter-high Hardegg Rocks. This viewpoint combines views of the town with the dramatic rocky landscape of the Thaya Valley. The Iron Curtain Memorial provides another historically significant focal point. Over a symbolic length of 50 meters, it presents an almost authentic reconstruction of the second barrier line of the Iron Curtain from the late 1980s.

The Thayatal National Park cycling trail is also relevant for active trip planning. It leads toward Horní Břečkov and turns right toward Lukov after one kilometer.
