Valtice – Château, Wine Cellars and UNESCO Cultural Landscape

Valtice combines grand château culture, deeply rooted wine tradition and an extensive cultural landscape. At Valtice Château, the Hlavní reprezentační okruh takes 55 minutes and leads through more than 20 grand rooms. The tour gives the château visit a clearly defined structure and makes the historic interiors the central experience. The Salon vín České republiky is also located in the same château. This public, year-round wine-tasting exhibition is housed in the cellars of the state-owned Valtice Château and presents the 100 best wines selected each year as part of the National Wine Competition. While the tour focuses on the château rooms, the Salon vín centres on a newly selected annual wine presentation.

Another facet of wine culture is showcased by the Zámecký sklep A.D. 1430 in the Valtice château grounds. It offers independent tours as well as tours with wine tasting. This means you can choose between a visit and a tour that explicitly includes a tasting. Those interested in the history of the cellars will find a 900-metre-long labyrinth of 13 interconnected historic wine cellars at Valtické Podzemí. Their history has been documented back to before 1289. Valtické Podzemí is open to visitors year-round.

Cultural Landscape, Trails and Museums

The Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. It can be explored via numerous hiking and cycling trails, on foot or by bicycle. For a specific route idea, there is the Stezka bosou nohou: the almost 5-kilometre circular trail with 12 experience stations runs between Schrattenberg and Valtice. The stations divide the trail into individual discovery moments, while the route connects Schrattenberg and Valtice as a circular trail. This movement-oriented experience complements visits to the château and cellars without limiting your stay to a single theme.

The National Agricultural Museum Valtice broadens the cultural perspective with exhibitions on the history of winegrowing, the natural wealth of the Lednicko-valtický areál and soil. More than 300 species of herbs grow in the Bylinková zahrada Lu & Tiree Chmelar, which also features educational beds. The two places have different focuses: the museum links winegrowing with the landscape and soil, while the garden showcases the diversity of herbs and their presentation in the educational beds. Both places also make Valtice appealing to travellers who want to discover other regional themes alongside architecture and wine.
