Týnec – Pilgrimage Church, Hody and Cycling Route

Týnec combines religious history, local memory, living traditions and a clearly described cycling route through flat terrain. The village thus brings together sacred history, a memorial site on the outskirts, traditional festivals and a route between two towns. Culture between the Pilgrimage Church and the Memorial Oak

The pilgrimage church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist lies at the centre of the village’s history. It is listed as a cultural monument and was built in the third quarter of the 18th century. The main pilgrimage takes place on 29 August, the feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The church therefore combines a building with a historical construction period and an established religious occasion.

Another memorial site lies on the outskirts of Týnec. Next to a chapel stands a memorial oak bearing an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The chapel beneath the oak was built in 1891. The pilgrimage church from the third quarter of the 18th century and the chapel from 1891 thus belong to different periods of construction. The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on the oak is also associated with a legend. The memorial site therefore combines a specific place with an inherited storytelling tradition.

The Main Pilgrimage and Hody “pod zeleným”

The traditional Hody “pod zeleným” are considered the most important social event in the village of Týnec. Held at the beginning of September, after the pilgrimage feast day, they form a distinct social occasion. The pilgrimage and Hody therefore differ both in their religious connection and in their role for the village: the focus here is on the religious celebration, while there it is on the social event.

Around 80 to 100 unmarried young men and women in traditional costumes take part in the Hody. The Hody thus combine festive clothing with the social life of the village. The approximate size of the participating group and the costumes are among the specific features of this tradition. In addition to its place in the calendar, the village festival therefore takes on a visibly communal form.

A Cycling Route through Flat Terrain

Alongside its cultural attractions, Týnec forms part of a specific cycling route. The 31-kilometre cycling route from Břeclav to Hodonín passes through Týnec. It runs through flat terrain and follows the Morava against the current. The 31 kilometres cover the complete connection between Břeclav and Hodonín; Týnec is one of the places along the route. The starting point, destination, landscape and direction of the Morava’s flow are therefore specifically linked. The cycling connection complements the pilgrimage church, memorial oak and traditional festivals with an independent route.
