Boleradice – Churches, Castle Ruins and Vineyard Landscapes

Boleradice combines remarkable religious buildings, vibrant Moravian traditions, and trails through a landscape shaped by rows of vineyards. At its heart is the Church of St John the Baptist: it is considered the oldest and largest monument in Boleradice and is also one of the four oldest churches in the Břeclav District. The exploration of the town therefore begins not with just any attraction, but with a building of particular historical significance.

Churches and Traditional Customs

The Church of St John the Baptist preserves a Romanesque window in its southern wall. Another notable religious building is the Chapel of St Roch, which was rebuilt in 1888 in a Baroque Revival style. A service is currently held there once a year in August. Boleradice thus brings together different historical layers: the Romanesque detail at the town’s oldest church and the chapel rebuilt in the 19th century.

The festival calendar is also part of the local culture. Jánské hody takes place at the end of June, on the weekend closest to the feast of the church’s patron saint, St John. The traditional dance associated with it is Zavádka. It was revived in Boleradice in 1993 and has continued to be maintained there in recent years. Those who want to get to know the town not only through its buildings but also through its customs will find an independent cultural perspective in this tradition.

Hiking and Cycling between Forests and Vineyards

The local hiking trails pass through wooded areas and offer views of the landscape shaped by rows of vineyards. Trail markings provide clear guidance when choosing a route: the yellow-marked trail via Nikitěnkova cesta leads to the blue trail. This continues via Kobylí and Vrbice to Čejkovice; in the opposite direction, it leads via Křepice to Velké Němčice. This makes it possible to explore in different directions without losing sight of the landscape connection between forests and vineyards.

Boleradice is also connected to the regional landscape for cyclists: from here, they can join the Velkopavlovická Wine Trail. The local paths and this wine cycling route therefore accommodate different ways of getting around, while the landscape remains their shared thematic setting.

Castle Ruins and Orientation on Site

The remains of Boleradice Castle lie above Boleradice in the Na Pasekách cadastral area. Ditches and ramparts can still be seen at the site. Their importance lies not only in the visible remains but also in their historical context: Boleradice Castle is considered significant evidence of the transitional phase from early medieval hillforts to an early feudal castle.
