Onšov: Culture, Water Landscape and Hiking Trails

Onšov combines a striking landscape with small, tangible discoveries from history and culture. The village is situated on a plateau that drops steeply to the southwest toward the Dyje Canyon. The cadastral area also includes the left bank of Švýcarská zátoka on Vranov Reservoir. Chapel and Wayside Shrine with Their Own History

Historical records mention Onšov in 1323 as part of the Vranov estate. The village is home to the Chapel of Saint Anne. The present chapel was built in 1835 to replace a chapel dating from 1754 and has two smaller bells. Another noteworthy monument is the Čtyřboká poklona, a Classicist wayside shrine with four sides on a rectangular ground plan. It stands in the immediate vicinity of Onšov, on the edge of Vranov Forest Park in the direction of Vranov nad Dyjí.

The design of the Čtyřboká poklona also draws attention to a special detail: According to art-historical assessments, the distinctively shaped trefoil gable refers to the cult of Panny Marie Třídubské. Thus, the cultural history is not limited to a year, but is reflected in architectural forms, religious references and individual elements of the village landscape.

Hiking between the Village Square and the Dyje Landscape

The Pěší Claryho okruh is a 6-kilometre circular hiking trail and is classified as moderately difficult. It leads through Onšov and turns left at the large chapel on the village square. This connects the village with a clearly described route and allows it to be included in travel planning as an independent hiking option.

A second point of orientation is provided by the Karla-Clary educational trail. It has six information panels and three benches; there is also a summit book at the viewpoint near the Clary Cross. The Stříbrné vodopády, also known as Onšovské vodopády, consist of five smaller waterfalls on the northwestern edge of Podyjí National Park, at the cadastral boundary between Onšov and Vranov nad Dyjí. The waterfalls are located northwest at the edge of the park, while Hamerské srázy lie south of Onšov in a different direction. The Hamerské srázy nature reserve is located south of Onšov.

Vranov Reservoir and Horseback Riding Trails

A landing stage on Vranov Reservoir is located in Onšov at the address Onšov ev. č. 4, 671 02 Onšov. For a different way of getting around, Jízdárna Onšov is a station on a horse trail leading through Podyjí National Park. The horse trail served by Jízdárna Onšov connects Znojmo with Vranov nad Dyjí; in addition, a riding trail runs through Onšov.
