Novosedly na Moravě – Wine, Culture and Nature

Novosedly na Moravě combines winegrowing, historical traces, special natural habitats and lively village festivals. The Stará Hora wine trail offers a particularly vivid way to get to know the village: since April 2005, it has led through the vineyards of the Marcinčák winery in Novosedly all year round. This means that discovering the village begins not with a general viewpoint, but with the specific landscapes and traditions that shape Novosedly.

Stará Hora and the Wine Culture of Novosedly

The Stará Hora trail is 3.5 kilometres long and equipped with 11 information panels. This creates several ways to enjoy an outing: you can learn about winegrowing, explore the vineyards of the Marcinčák winery and combine the walk with further impressions of the village. The trail is also of interest to cyclists because it forms part of the 37-kilometre Stará Hora cycling loop.

Visitors can tour the Marcinčák winery and see how wine is made there. The winery also offers tastings of its wines all year round. Another option is the Víno Ritter wine cellar, which is open to visitors during the main season. Víno Ritter offers guided wine tastings for groups of five or more. Depending on your travel plans, this allows you to choose between different types of wine experience, without all visitors having to follow the same itinerary.

Romanesque Church and Czechoslovak Fortifications

The church dedicated to Saint Ulrich stands in the village square. The saint is regarded as the patron of those who suffer and the sick. The Church of Saint Ulrich is one of the few original Romanesque church buildings in the Břeclav District. Romanesque windows can be seen in the roof space, and Romanesque ashlar stones have also been preserved in the walls. For those interested in culture, the appeal lies in the visible architectural features, not only in the building’s later use as a place of worship.

The “U starého lomu” Museum offers a different historical perspective. It displays a reconstructed vz. 37 light fortification structure from the Czechoslovak fortification system of 1935 to 1938. Slanisko Novosedly: A Special Natural Area

Slanisko Novosedly is the last richer site in the Czech Republic where the endangered narrow-leaved bristle grass (Heleochloa schoenoides) can be found. The natural area also provides a habitat for European tree frogs (Hyla arborea), fire-bellied toads (Bombina bombina) and breeding birds such as river warblers (Locustella luscinioides) and great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus). Slanisko thus complements the wine and culture themes with a remarkable natural history aspect of Novosedly.

Festivals Between the Church and the Wine Cellars

During the Krojované hody, the costumed procession goes to the church for Mass and the blessing of the celebrations. Krojované hody usually takes place on the second Sunday in August. Another regular feature of the local events calendar is the wine harvest festival, which was revived in 2003. During it, a procession visits wine cellars and wine taverns and renews the right to serve wine.

At Novosedelské sklepy open, visitors can walk through open wine cellars where local winegrowers offer their wines for tasting. In 2023, the event took place on 17 June and 16 September; the regular dates are the third weekend in June and the third weekend in September.
