Lundenburg

Lundenburg brings together different historical eras within a compact cultural area: Renaissance architecture, Jewish architectural history, Liechtenstein regional heritage, archaeology and evidence of industrial history. For you and your family, this creates a journey combining viewpoints, walks, museums and unusual exhibitions. It is particularly interesting that several places offer completely different types of visits, allowing a single trip to accommodate different ages and interests.

Chateau, synagogue and a walk through the city

Břeclav Chateau is a Renaissance chateau built on the foundations of an older castle. In the 19th century, the Liechtensteins remodelled the building in the Romantic style. At present, only the viewing platform on the chateau tower is accessible at Břeclav Chateau. This restriction is part of the current visitor situation and clearly distinguishes the site from a fully accessible chateau tour.

Another historical trace leads to the synagogue in Břeclav. It was built in 1868 and renovated in 1888 by the Viennese architect Max Fleischer in the Romanesque Revival style; Moorish elements were used in the interior. Following extensive reconstruction between 1997 and 1999, the synagogue is currently used for cultural and social purposes. Architectural history and present-day use stand side by side here.

For an exploration on foot, the “Břeclavský chodníček” is a good option, a walking route through the city of Břeclav. In addition, the Cukrovarský Bridge is a protected cultural monument that currently serves as a pedestrian bridge. At the Muzeum Pod vodárnou, access is barrier-free for people with disabilities and families with pushchairs. Thus, alongside the historic buildings, there is also a documented site with particularly good accessibility.

Liechtenstein history and archaeology

The Empire-style Pohansko Chateau was built by the Liechtensteins between 1810 and 1812 for hunting purposes on the site of an older Slavic hillfort. A new archaeological exhibition opened at Zámeček Pohansko on 12 September 2023. Audiovisual effects, touchscreens, special film projections and other interactive elements give this exhibition a format that differs from the historic architecture of the Empire-style chateau.

The Lichtenštejnský dům houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the Liechtenstein family. It also displays 20 true-to-scale miniatures of Liechtenstein monuments based on the precise digitisation of real buildings. For families, this alternation between original buildings, historical narratives and scale models can create a varied sequence of impressions.

Industrial history is also part of the townscape

The branch railway connecting the sugar factory with the railway network was built in 1870. It adds an industrial perspective to the courtly, religious and archaeological history. The range of documented sites therefore extends from a viewing platform through a city walk and a synagogue to exhibitions, a bridge and transport history.
