Architecture from Several Eras

The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a central cultural and historical landmark in Mikulovice. As a late Romanesque church, it dates from the third quarter of the 13th century. The apse, nave and portal have been preserved. At the same time, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style around 1766. This building therefore reveals two clearly different historical influences: its medieval basic form and the later Baroque alteration. The sights in Mikulovice also include the stone wayside shrine Boží muka. It is considered an impressive example of vernacular architecture from the second quarter of the 19th century. Another statue is dedicated to Saint Florian. The granary sýpka is also an immovable cultural monument. The farm building located east of the rectory is an integral part of an area of urban-planning, architectural and art-historical value. Together, these buildings and monuments create a picture in which religious, rural and architectural history can be seen side by side.

Mikulovické jezero and Its Rare Plant Community

Mikulovické jezero has a completely different character. The area is a nature monument and protects an aquatic and wetland habitat with a plant community shaped by local salinisation and rare in this part of Moravia. Its special feature therefore lies not only in the water itself, but also in the conditions that determine the plant life of this place. Among other species, fire-bellied toads, European tree frogs and European green toads reproduce in the area of Mikulovické jezero. Marsh harriers, moorhens, common snipes and great reed warblers have also been observed there. This offers nature enthusiasts a second perspective on Mikulovice: alongside the historic buildings, the focus is on a habitat whose plant and animal life has been explicitly documented.
