Podmyče – Local History and Trails Near Podyjí National Park

Podmyče combines a rural landscape, a clearly documented local history, and various trails through the Czech-Austrian border region. The village lies on the road from Vranov nad Dyjí to Šafov, in a valley and predominantly agricultural landscape. At the same time, the forests of Podyjí National Park are just a few kilometres from Podmyče in an easterly direction via nearby Vranov nad Dyjí. The western boundary of the national park begins at the Czech-Austrian state border southeast of Podmyče. The valley and agricultural landscape shape the immediate surroundings of the village; to the east, beyond Vranov nad Dyjí, the forests of Podyjí National Park form a distinctly different landscape. Local History and the Chapel of St Margaret

Podmyče was first mentioned in a document on 28 September 1323. The history of the village has always been closely connected with its affiliation to the Vranov estate. A notable visible historical feature is the Chapel of St Margaret. It was built in 1721 and is a single-nave masonry building. The year 1323 marks an early period in the history of the village; the chapel adds a tangible structure to it. In addition to its landscapes, Podmyče therefore offers a concrete cultural and historical point of interest directly in the village.

The local customs include Posvícení. It is celebrated on the first Saturday and Sunday in October. Lime burning, a historic activity of the local population in Podmyče, is another part of the village's heritage. The autumn date of the festival and the former work of producing lime thus represent different forms of local tradition. Cycling and Hiking with Different Route Profiles

For cycling directions, the Vranov–Hardegg route is described particularly clearly. It reaches the junction towards Podmyče, turns onto a dirt track before the village, and continues to Felling. This cycle route is marked with green signs bearing a white flower. The route therefore approaches Podmyče without identifying the village as a station passed through in the section described.

A different perspective is offered by the six-hour hiking route “Poznejme naše sousedy”. It leads from Vranov nad Dyjí through Podmyče to Felling, explicitly incorporating the village into a longer hiking connection. The route of the “Hrady a zámky česko-rakouského příhraničí” cycling tour is different again: The 53 km route follows the road towards Podmyče but does not pass through the village. At the junction, it continues to Šafov via a short detour. These differences are more important when choosing a suitable route than simply listing cycling and hiking options.
