Lipovec – Nature, History and Experiences

Lipovec lies on the edge of the Moravian Karst, at the transition between the karst area and the Drahanská vrchovina highlands. This makes it a destination where nature, regional history and active pursuits are closely connected. Particularly characteristic are the protected area of Černá skála, the preserved traces of lime burning, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and various routes for cyclists and hikers.

Černá skála: Quarry, Pond and Protected Habitat

The specially protected area of Černá skála is centered around a pond at the bottom of an old quarry with Culm shales in the built-up area of the municipality of Lipovec. The site protects a particularly valuable habitat for amphibians; the occurrence and reproduction of several specially protected animal species have been documented. Černá skála is also notable from a geological perspective: siltstones and fine-grained greywackes of the Rozstáň Formation are exposed in an abandoned quarry. Lipovec therefore offers not only classic cultural attractions but also specific natural and landscape features for your travel planning.

Church, Village History and Lime Kilns

The first written mention of Lipovec dates from 1349. A central historical landmark is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built from 1828 to 1842 and consecrated on September 8, 1843. It was originally built without a tower; it was not until 1921 that a small tower structure was added to the roof. In front of the church stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, newly made in 1816 and moved there in 1975. A cross also stands in front of the church; it was erected in 1852 by farmers and carters from Lipovec who transported charcoal to Adamov.

The history of local lime burning can be seen in several preserved and historic facilities. The Velká Dohoda limeworks was founded in 1928 and operated until 1979. The remains of the Vrchničákova limeworks have also been preserved in Lipovec. Vodákova is the second of the two surviving limeworks in Lipovec. This historical picture is complemented by the archaeological site of an unknown medieval settlement that has since disappeared. Its existence is dated, based on archaeological finds, from the second half of the 13th century to the beginning of the 16th century.

Cycling Routes, Hiking Trail and Velká Dohoda

Lipovec is home to a cycling-route junction from which practically all surrounding municipalities can be reached. For a bicycle trip, this specific connection to the routes is more important than a general description of the landscape: you can choose Lipovec as the starting point for an exploration without limiting yourself to just one excursion destination. A green-marked hiking trail also passes through Lipovec. It begins in the resort town of Jedovnice, runs via Senetářov and the Zálomí trail junction past the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, continues to the Velká Dohoda complex and ends in Suchý žleb at Kalvodův kříž.

The Velká Dohoda complex has practice via ferrata routes, or secured paths, with a length of 150 meters. Climbing is possible on a 15-meter-high limestone wall; the necessary equipment and an instructor are available. The rope park is set on ten posts and includes ten high and seven low obstacles. It is suitable for children and adults, giving it a clearly different focus from the site's historical and natural attractions.

Traditions and Events in Lipovec

Lipovec has a tradition of slivovitz and slivovitz liqueur tastings. The 20th edition is listed for February 15, 2025, with another tasting scheduled for February 7, 2026. Various events take place at Sokolovna, including Easter and Christmas exhibitions as well as theatrical performances by local artists. A traditional Easter exhibition by the Spolek Vápeníček is listed for March 21, 2026.
