Velké Opatovice combines an engaging local history with walks through fields and forests, as well as a Koupaliště for varied days. Museums, Cartography and Castle History

The Museum and Memorial of the Town presents the history of Velké Opatovice, local-history and historical collections, and the Herberstein family’s historical library. This allows you to encounter the town not only through its buildings, but also through regional memories and preserved collections. One admission ticket entitles you to enter both the Moravian Cartographic Centre and the Town Memorial. The two institutions can therefore be viewed as a related cultural element of your visit.

The Moravian Cartographic Centre is dedicated to the development of cartography in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia – from the earliest times to the present day. This chronological scope distinguishes the centre from a purely local exhibition and makes it interesting if you are interested in maps, landscape depictions and the development of geographical knowledge. Velké Opatovice Castle, built in the Baroque style in 1757, provides another historical highlight.

Church of Saint George and Distinctive Local Details

The Church of Saint George also tells the story of several historical layers. It was first mentioned in writing in 1392. The present building was constructed in 1790–1791 and replaced a Gothic church that had been remodelled in the Baroque style in the second half of the 14th century. There is also a relief of Saint George on the wall behind the altar, created by Karel Otáhal in 1951. The church thus offers both a long historical context and a specifically identifiable work of art.

One of the notable natural and local landmarks is the Opatovice Pine. In 2014, it was named the Czech Tree of the Year. This date and the award give the tree a firmly established place in the local story.

Hanýsek Educational Trail: Field and Forest Paths

For a more active part of your stay, the Hanýsek Educational Trail begins at Šraňky in Velké Opatovice and follows field and forest paths. The route therefore does not lead through an exhibition, but into the landscape around its starting point. Nine information boards provide information about natural attractions in the northern part of the Blansko District. Families and travel groups can thus combine the walk with individual moments of discovery, while the boards provide thematic context for the natural surroundings.

Koupaliště for Swimming and Water Fun

The Koupaliště in Velké Opatovice has a swimming pool, a leisure pool and a children’s pool. There is also a 70-metre water slide and a slide. This allows you to spend a day differently from a museum or walking day: you can choose between swimming, relaxing and sliding fun without having to repeat the town’s cultural themes. Those travelling with children will find particularly concrete opportunities here for a shared day at the pool.
