Plaveč: Rotunda, Jevišovka and Lapikus

Plaveč combines riverside landscapes, medieval traces and an unusually rich history within a small area. The village stretches along both banks of the Jevišovka. As a result, peaceful landscape experiences meet marked trails and remarkable buildings here. A rotunda with many historical layers

The Plaveč château complex includes a Romanesque rotunda. It is already mentioned in written records from 1234 and is a late Romanesque building from the first half of the 13th century. In the 1830s, it was extended with an Empire-style addition; a crypt was created beneath the rotunda in 1868. Its restoration in 2008 is part of its more recent history. At the same time, the rotunda continues to serve liturgical purposes.

Individual details also make a visit a discovery. An open bell tower houses a bell from 1487. It is one of the four oldest bells in the Znojmo District. A stone sculpture with four human faces looking in the four cardinal directions stands on the stone lantern. The rotunda also contains a tombstone dated 1557 belonging to Mariana Višňovská of Petrovac. The branch church in Plaveč is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Château history and the Lapikus castle site

Plaveč Château stands on the site of an earlier castle complex and is currently used as a retirement home. For planning excursions, it is therefore important to distinguish between the château complex and the historical traces in the surrounding area. Another prominent stop is Lapikus Castle. It was probably built in the second half of the 14th century and is already mentioned as abandoned in 1508.

A marked trail leads to the castle site across a deep ditch carved into the rock. In the Lapikus area, steep, inaccessible rocky slopes rise above the Jevišovka. They provide habitats for rare plant species. Relatively well-preserved near-natural woodland also harbours rare species in the herb layer. Woodrush and Hercynian oak-hornbeam forests are found there, transitioning into a form of Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests. Anyone wishing to include landscape and nature observation alongside architectural history will find a distinctly different focus here than at the rotunda.

Hiking, cycling and water-based activities

The varied Jevišovka Valley near Plaveč is ideal for hiking and cycling. A yellow-marked and a green-marked hiking trail pass through the village. For longer cycling tours, long-distance cycle route No. 481 from Jeseník to Znojmo runs through Plaveč. This makes it possible to choose accommodation according to different daily plans: the trails in the village and the Jevišovka Valley are suited to active exploration, while the rotunda and castle site offer historical destinations.

The swimming beaches at the Výrovice Reservoir, accessible from Plaveč, offer an additional option for a day by the water. The reservoir thus complements the Jevišovka riverside landscape with a different landscape and leisure theme. For families who do not want to combine culture with the same activity every day, this creates a choice between historical discoveries, exercise in the valley and time spent at the swimming beaches.
