Dyje: River Landscape, Natural Monument and Baroque Culture

Dyje combines a distinctive river landscape with protected natural areas, historic paths and Baroque buildings. The Dyje River flows through the municipality of Dyje, shaping a place where nature and cultural attractions can be explored in different ways. Natural Monument on the Dyje River

One particularly characteristic place is the Dyjské svahy Natural Monument. It is located in the municipality of Dyje and in the cadastral area of Dyje. The protected area lies on a rocky, west-facing slope above the Dyje River, south of the municipality of Dyje of the same name, in the direction of Tasovice. This location alone brings together several landscape features: the river, the slope and the transition to a dry, warm environment.

The natural monument protects plant communities that thrive in dry and warm conditions. They include numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. The area's value therefore lies not only in its position above the river, but also in the special habitats preserved on this rocky slope.

Bike Ride and the History of the Route

A documented bike ride passes through Dyje, crosses the Dyje River there and continues along the opposite bank to the Dyjské svahy Natural Monument. Visitors can leave their bicycles at a shelter there and walk a short distance towards the river. The described connection therefore combines a section by bicycle with a subsequent section on foot, without implying that the two forms of activity are equivalent.

The former Svatoklementská stezka should be distinguished from this route. It ran between Hodonice and Znojmo via Tasovice, Dyje and Dobšice and, in its former form, was suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. It is currently considered to be unmaintained; many information boards no longer work or are completely missing. If you take this historic route alignment into account when planning, you should therefore not confuse it with a currently maintained route.

Wayside Shrine, Church and Chateau

North of Dyje, in the fields along a former road to Dobšice, stands the statue of the saint, also known as the Boží-muka wayside shrine. The structure is an Early Baroque pillar shrine dating from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its design can be seen in several structural elements: a pillar with a cornice stands on a square foundation, above it is a chapel decorated with shallow reliefs, topped by a concave-curved pyramidal roof.

The cultural attractions also include the Late Baroque Church of St. John of Nepomuk, which is considered an important pilgrimage site. Another historic landmark is the Baroque Chateau Dyje. It was built from 1768 to 1775 by the Premonstratensians from Louka. Together with the wayside shrine, this creates a chronological arc from Late Baroque sacred architecture to an Early Baroque small monument and an 18th-century chateau.
