Vratěnín Between Heritage Conservation and Landscape

Vratěnín combines an unusually rich historical heritage with a landscape that can be explored on foot and by bicycle. In 1995, Vratěnín was declared a village heritage zone because of its heritage value. Its cadastral area contains 21 listed buildings and sites. This gives you a clear choice for planning your trip between cultural and historical discoveries, a hike with several stops and long-distance cycling routes.

Church, Postal History and Historic Buildings

The parish Church of St. James the Greater is a late Baroque building dating from 1771 to 1773. The church has three 18th-century sculptures: a sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus from the second quarter of the 18th century, as well as statues of St. Francis Xavier and St. John of Nepomuk from the first third of the 18th century, both made of limestone.

Postal history is also closely connected with the village. The building of the former post station in Vratěnín was built around 1700 by postmaster Jan Plessner. Vratěnín and Slavonice were the first post stations in Moravia. The former monastery church was consecrated in 1739 and had two towers, two chapels and seven altars. The former small château in Vratěnín is described as the original fortress on the village square.

Another focus is on fortifications. The Mini-Museum of Fortifications in Vratěnín is located in an atypical ŘOPík vz. 37 A-120N bunker from 1937. In connection with the fortifications, you can view historical weapons and equipment and learn about the so-called “false border” from the period of the former regime.

Archaeological Traces Around “U kola”

The “U kola” archaeological site preserves the remains of a fortified settlement with a circular ground plan and a diameter of 65 metres. Archaeological finds in the surrounding area include materials from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, La Tène period and early medieval period. The “U kola” site has a 35-metre core surrounded by a ditch 10 to 12 metres wide and 3.15 metres deep. This gives the site several layers of history that can be combined during a cultural and historical excursion.

Nature Reserve and Hiking Trail

Bílý kříž Nature Reserve protects vegetation on steep, sunny rocky slopes, the adjoining species-rich and old-growth forest, as well as protected plant and animal species. The rocky viewpoint of Bílý kříž gives the nature reserve its name. From there, a marked trail leads along the Graselova Trail.

The Graselova Trail in Vratěnín is a circular route of approximately 7 to 11 kilometres, of moderate difficulty, with three stops. The route passes Vratěnínský rybník and branches off to Graselova vyhlídka or Zlatá studánka. If you would like to combine culture and physical activity in one trip, this circular route offers a distinctive complement to the church, heritage zone and fortifications museum. For groups of at least ten visitors, a free guided tour of Vratěnín can be arranged at least three days before the visit.

Cycling and Local Traditions

Vratěnín lies on the Praha–Wien long-distance cycling route as well as on the Iron Curtain Trail, EuroVelo 13. The Graselova Trail connects the local landscape with a viewpoint, pond and spring.

The Šibeník hill is also part of the village’s traditional history. In 1750, the inhabitants of Vratěnín decided to erect a statue of St. Donatus there. He is venerated as the patron saint against storms, lightning and hail and was intended to protect the village and the fields. In this way, a local religious tradition complements the site’s archaeological, Baroque and military-historical themes.
