Cultural History in Dambořice

The present-day Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin of Tours is a Late Baroque building dating from the second half of the 18th century; its nave was built around 1780. At the same time, the church is a state-protected cultural monument. It therefore represents the town’s older architectural history and serves as an important cultural reference point in Dambořice.

The Jewish cemetery represents another important historical focus. It was probably established around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Around 300 to 400 gravestones have been preserved on the site, which is also a state-protected cultural monument. Its location is clearly described for orientation in the town: it is situated behind the Catholic cemetery. In addition, the Dambořice Municipal Museum occasionally presents exhibitions in the municipal office building.

Traditions and Townscape

The Martinské hody are particularly characteristic. This is an annual three-day tradition. It is always celebrated on the first Sunday after the feast of the parish patron saint, St. Martin of Tours, on 11 November. During the Martinské hody, four Stárci and four Stárky in Dambořice folk costumes, together with a cellar master, take part. This precise composition also makes the tradition interesting for visitors who want to experience regional festival culture not only through buildings, but also through traditional roles and costumes.

The new village square is also part of the present-day townscape. It features landscaped park areas, pavilions and a fountain. A memorial there commemorates the former synagogue of the Jewish community. In this way, the landscaped park and the memorial to the former synagogue stand side by side in the same location.

Wine Tradition and Preserved Cellars

Dambořice is a wine-growing municipality with dozens of wine cellars and belongs to the Kyjov wine region. Wine is therefore not merely part of individual events, but represents one of the town’s distinct themes. Fragments of so-called Habán wine cellars from the 16th century have been preserved. The surviving Habán wine cellars are privately owned.

Cycling Routes and Travel Orientation

Cycling route No. 5095 passes through Dambořice. Its route runs through Dambořice, Uhřice, Silničná and Zdravá Voda, where it reconnects with route No. 473. The Kyjov Wine Trail also passes through Dambořice.
