Josefov U Hodonína – Wine, Traditions and Landscape

Vinařství Prath offers a specific insight into the local wine culture. The winery puts together individually tailored, guided wine tastings for groups of up to 18 people. Vinařství Prath processes exclusively grapes from its own integrated production. At a tasting, therefore, the focus is not only on the wine, but also on the traceable origin of the grapes used.

The Josefovské búdy are part of the local wine and cellar landscape in Josefov. North of Josefov, among the wine cellars, there is also a monument to Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers. Those interested in winemaking and local history will therefore find two different points of connection here: the practical side of wine production and a religiously inspired symbol of the winemaking tradition.

Church and monuments in the village

The present-day Church of All Saints provides a historical point of reference. It was created in 1877 by converting a chapel. Another notable landmark is the Baroque statue of Saint Anne, considered the oldest monument in Josefov. It stands on the edge of the village on the road to Prušánky. This location makes the statue a clearly identifiable point at the transition from the village to the surrounding landscape.

Annual festivals with their own character

The traditional costume Hody festival is the largest event in Josefov every year. Anyone visiting the village at this time will therefore experience an occasion of particular importance in the annual calendar. Another tradition is “Smrtnica”, held every year on “Smrtná neděle”. During it, a singing procession of girls passes through Josefov. The “BABA” figure is undressed by the stream; the remains are then thrown into the flowing spring water.

The winemaking and traditions festival “Zarážání hory” also takes place in Josefov every year in August and is open to visitors. Together with the costume Hody festival and “Smrtnica”, this festival shows that local culture is visible not only in buildings, but equally in recurring events and inherited practices.

Fields, the Prušánka and a long cycling route

The small Prušánka River flows immediately behind Josefov. Together with the fields, vineyards and orchards, it shapes the landscape around the village. For a more active day, the 56-kilometre “Malý hodonínský okruh” cycling route passes through Josefov. Its length makes it a clear option for travellers who want to include a longer bike ride in their choice of destination.
