Rakvice – Ponds, Wine Tradition and Culture in the Lednice-Valtice Area

Rakvice combines a distinctive waterscape with wine-growing traditions and remarkable cultural monuments. The municipality is one of the six municipalities in the Lednice-Valtice Area, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. This makes it a destination where nature observation, summer days by the water and regional history come together within a compact thematic area.

Ponds and Protected Nature in Rakvice

Fishing is possible as a recreational activity at the Jezera ponds in Rakvice. The Trávníky pond has a beach with pavilions where swimming is possible in summer. These two places represent different types of water-based experiences: while Jezera is associated with a specific recreational activity by the water, Trávníky offers a beach area with pavilions and the opportunity to swim in summer.

The smaller bodies of water and wetland habitats are also part of Rakvice’s character. Jezírko Kutnar is an abandoned side arm of the Dyje River with aquatic vegetation. Tůňka Kutnar is protected as a natural monument because of its remarkable algal flora. Those interested in the less obvious aspects of a landscape will therefore find not only bodies of water here, but also distinctive forms of aquatic nature.

Cultural Monuments with Specific Stories

A central cultural monument in the village is the Church of St. John the Baptist, registered under number 1706. Its tower, including the cupola, is 33.66 metres high. The church complex also includes a mortuary and a bell tower clad in boards. These details make the building interesting not only as a religious structure, but also in terms of its architectural composition.

Other independent historical testimonies can be found throughout the village. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk was created by Tomáš Schweigl in 1775. The Baroque cross in Rakvice dates from 1803 and is registered as a central cultural monument under number 1708. The statue from 1775 and the Baroque cross from 1803 thus represent two different periods of origin within the village landscape. A memorial near the Church of St. John the Baptist commemorates the victims of both world wars and the Holocaust. The cultural spectrum therefore ranges from Baroque art and ecclesiastical architectural history to deliberate remembrance of the more recent past.

Wine-Growing and Regional Identity

Rakvice is a wine-growing municipality with a long tradition of cultivating grapes. At the same time, the village is an important ethnographic centre of the Hanácké Slovácko region. Here, wine-growing and regional folk culture complement the natural and historic landscape with a clearly recognisable Moravian dimension.
