Brno: Culture, Underground and Water between Villa Tugendhat and Å pilberk

Brno combines impressive architecture, fortress history, unusual underground spaces and excursions to the water. This makes the city suitable for travelers who do not want to limit their stay to a single attraction: cultural discoveries can be followed by insights into the city’s history, viewpoints, a visit to the zoo or time at the Brno Reservoir.

Architecture and history with distinctive details

A special starting point for exploring the city’s culture is Villa Tugendhat. It is considered a pioneering work of modern residential architecture of the 20th century and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The villa offers a 60-minute tour of the building. The garden is accessible depending on weather conditions; exhibitions take place on the technical floor. To get there, take tram lines 3, 5 or 9 to Dětská nemocnice and then walk approximately 600 meters.

The history of Å pilberk can also be viewed across several eras. The site was first mentioned in writing in 1277 and was converted into a large Baroque fortress in the following century. Part of the fortifications was designated as a prison for the worst and most dangerous criminals. The casemates are both an architectural curiosity and a major tourist attraction in Brno. At Å pilberk, architectural history, fortress architecture and an unusual use of the site therefore stand side by side.

Beneath Zelný trh and in the heart of city life

Zelný trh combines everyday market life with an underground visitor experience. Farmers’ markets take place on the square every day. There is a public toilet in the market hall, while a freely accessible drinking fountain stands in the lower part of the square. Beneath the vegetable market lies a labyrinth extending up to 8 meters below the square. The tour includes an alchemist’s laboratory, an old wine cellar and a historic tavern. The cellars once served as storage rooms for owners and local merchants and were also used as shelters during the war.

Another historical detail awaits you at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul: its bells traditionally ring at 11 a.m. to mark noon. The Anthropos Pavilion adds another focus from contemporary history to the cultural picture. It was built in 1962 for an exhibition that Professor Karel Absolon had created in 1928.

Views, animals and water

The observation terrace of the Brno Observatory and Planetarium offers views of Brno during the day and at night. The observatory and planetarium are served by tram line 4. Brno Zoo focuses on nature conservation, education and the breeding of endangered species. Those who want to combine a cultural stay with landscapes and activities on the water will find a leisure and sports area on the Svratka at the Brno Reservoir, with beaches, boating and attractive surroundings.

Cyclists can also explore the city from their own perspective: Brno has a relatively dense network of cycle paths covering the city. The history of public transport dates back to 1869, when the first horse-drawn tram in the Bohemian lands began operating.

Which location is right for your accommodation?

When searching for a hotel in Brno, you can align your preferred focus with the documented connections. For Villa Tugendhat, tram lines 3, 5 and 9, followed by a walk of approximately 600 meters, are relevant; tram line 4 leads to the observatory and planetarium. At the same time, the city offers a broad range of themes: architecture and UNESCO culture, fortress history, the market and underground, the zoo, cycling and the Brno Reservoir can all be weighted differently depending on your travel plans.
