Zdíkov between Castle History and Parkland

Zdíkov combines a distinctive castle history with heritage-listed cultural sites and landscape features. The castle complex, St. Ludmila Church and the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on Liz lead from historic architecture to parkland and forest landscape. From the older stone Renaissance fortress through the castle park to the sacred buildings, different forms of architecture and landscape come together.

Zdíkov Castle and Its Park

Zdíkov Castle was created by remodeling an older stone Renaissance fortress, first mentioned in 1666. At that time, the estate belonged to the Malovcové family. The castle complex, including the park, is heritage-listed. At the same time, the castle currently serves as a hotel. This combines historic building fabric with present-day use in the same place. When choosing a place to stay, the hotel use is a concrete distinction from a site preserved exclusively as a historic building.

The six-hectare castle park of Zdíkov forms an independent landscape area beside the castle complex. This area contains a wetland. For travelers who want to combine culture and landscape, the park therefore stands as a separate area alongside the castle. In this way, the parkland complements the historic architecture with a natural space.

St. Ludmila Church and the Chapel on Liz

St. Ludmila Church was built in 1921–1922 in the late Art Nouveau style and is heritage-listed. In 1922, the painter and restorer Josef Hübsch created an altarpiece depicting St. Ludmila and St. Wenceslas. The church adds a younger, precisely dated chapter of local culture to the older castle history. At the church, the late Art Nouveau construction period and the altarpiece created in 1922 combine to form a distinctive cultural focus.

Another historic point of reference lies on Liz. The Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on Liz is located in Zdíkov’s castle forest park. The present Romanticizing chapel was built in 1852 by Franz Anton Count Thun-Hohenstein beside a spring described as miraculous. The combination of chapel, spring and forest park brings architecture, landscape and traditional local history together. The year 1852 clearly distinguishes the chapel in time from St. Ludmila Church, built in 1921–1922.

A forest avenue leads from the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on Liz to the forester’s lodge on Liz. The route connects the chapel, forest avenue and forester’s lodge in a clear sequence through the forest. For an excursion with changing focal points, you can thus plan sacred architecture and forest landscape together without assuming a specific duration or level of difficulty.
