Strážný – Golden Trail, Kunžvart and Šumava
Strážný combines the history of the Golden Trail with the landscapes of Šumava. The settlement enclave emerged along the Vimperk branch of the Golden Trail near the border with Germany. The boundary of Šumava National Park also runs through Strážný; the northeastern part of the settlement lies outside the park.
Trade Route and Landscape around Strážný
On Obecnà vrch south of Strážný lies an almost one-kilometre-long system of remains of the Vimperk branch of the Golden Trail. It is considered one of the best-preserved remnants of the Golden Trail. This gives the landscape a tangible historical connection that you can discover while exploring the town and its surroundings.
Another prominent reminder is the earth-fill dam of the Weiher pond. It is considered the oldest earth-fill dam in Central Europe and dates from the 15th to the 16th century. The dam was built by Petr Malovec between 1543 and 1547. This precise dating makes the site particularly interesting for anyone who wants to combine experiences in nature with regional history.
Winter Sports in Strážný
The Strážný ski area has three drag lifts right in Strážný. The ski area offers groomed downhill runs with artificial snowmaking as well as groomed cross-country skiing trails. The Šumava Ski Highway also passes through Strážný, connecting Železná Ruda with Zadnà Zvonková. This allows you to distinguish between the facilities in the ski area and a cross-country route of regional importance.
Kunžvart Castle Ruins and Further Discoveries
The ruins of Kunžvart Castle are a border castle on the eastern spur of Mount Strážný, about 1.5 km from the municipality of Strážný. At an elevation of 1,033 m, Kunžvart is among the highest-altitude castles in the Czech Republic. The royal guard castle was built near the national border to protect the Golden Trail. This provides a clear cultural destination for your plans, closely connected with the history of the trade route.
A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the ruins of Kunžvart Castle to the former Orlova Huť and to a viewpoint dedicated to Václav Hrubý. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1834, also stands on Kamenný vrch northwest of Strážný. These different destinations allow you to include historical monuments, trails and viewpoints in your own daily itinerary without reducing the history of the area to a single attraction.
