Bohunice U Tvrzic: History and Rural Character
Accommodation in Bohunice U Tvrzic
Tvrzice combines a long local history with distinctive farmsteads and a rural landscape. A medieval fortress, a chapel, a brickworks and a former windmill represent different aspects of the village’s history. Paths, waterways and the greenery alongside them also shape the municipality’s landscape. In Bohunice U Tvrzic, cultural and historical details meet a distinctly rural character.
History and Origins of Tvrzice
The first written mention of Tvrzice dates from 1315. It records the founding of “Twrzicze” by Queen Eliška Přemyslovna, the wife of John of Luxembourg. Another historical landmark is a medieval fortress: it stood on the site of today’s farmstead; according to some sources, it was located on Hůrka. Both the village’s early history and the reported location of the fortress are therefore part of its historical story.
Farmsteads with Their Own Architectural History
Three buildings from the later period of folk architect Jakub Bursa’s work have been preserved in Tvrzice: Usedlost čp. 7, dating from 1860; the former inn, čp. 9, dating from 1862; and Usedlost čp. 11, also dating from 1862. Usedlost čp. 7 is one of three buildings in Tvrzice protected as cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Its gable was originally yellow and blue.
The three houses offer different architectural points of interest. Usedlost čp. 9 is a remodeled former inn without a dwelling house; the building from 1862 has been preserved as a former inn. Usedlost čp. 11 has a winged volute gable featuring a folk-style image. The architectural history cannot be reduced to a single form: the date, former use, gable color and decorative image each add a distinct detail.
Chapel, Brickworks and Windmill
An unadorned chapel with a bell tower dating from the mid-19th century stands on Tvrzice’s barely defined village green. Further south of the village, the Tvrzice estate built its own brickworks in 1921; its chimney still stands. The local history therefore includes both the village chapel and a structure associated with the estate of that time.
The U větrníku field near the brickworks is another historic site. Until the mid-20th century, a windmill there pumped water from a well to the farmstead. The chapel, brickworks and windmill served different functions in village life: a landmark in the village, a brickworks and the former water supply for the farmstead.
Rural Landscape and Travel Planning
The municipality of Tvrzice lies in a harmonious rural landscape. Its network of paths and waterways, with the greenery alongside them, shapes its varied character and contributes significantly to the area’s ecological stability. These landscape features complement the individual buildings and historic sites with a view of the municipality as a whole.
When planning your trip, you can focus on two different aspects: the architectural and local history reflected in the dated farmsteads and historical records, or the rural character shaped by paths, waterways and greenery. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these aspects matters more to you during your stay.
