Discover Vlachovo Brezí
Vlachovo Březí is a place where several historical layers come together. It was elevated to a market town in 1538 and became a town in 1868. The designation as a heritage zone is also part of the town’s history. For planning your trip, a combination of buildings, religious destinations and excursions in the surrounding area is therefore a good option. If you choose accommodation for different interests, you can first weigh up local history, sacred architecture, a summer excursion or regional destinations.
History reflected in the townscape
The château in Vlachovo Březí is currently unused and not open to the public. Nevertheless, it preserves notable historic architectural elements: on the ground floor there is original stone masonry two metres thick and Romanesque barrel vaults. Stucco ceilings in the Baroque style have been preserved on the first floor. The château is therefore part of the town’s history, but it is not a publicly accessible visitor attraction.
Churches, pilgrimage and Jewish history
The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Vlachovo Březí dates from the mid-17th century and was built by Karel Leopold, Count of Millesimo. A Stations of the Cross leading uphill, with a Calvary group and fourteen chapels, leads to the sv. Ducha pilgrimage site. The pilgrimage chapel itself contains fourteen relief-like wooden carvings of the Stations of the Cross. Another historic site is the Jewish cemetery with around 200 gravestones; the oldest dates from 1729. The cemetery is freely accessible.
Traditions and excursions
The local economic history is also tangible: Panský pivovar Brewery was founded around 1670 and operated until 1924. Every year around the transition from May to June, the large Svatodušní pouť pilgrimage takes place in Vlachovo Březí. The former smithy “Bývalá kovárna” is a residential and farm building. Its southern gable features volute wings and stucco decoration typical of Jakub Bursa.
For an excursion with practical family and dog planning, the “Za kozlíky, pivovary a nejhezčími holkami do Vlachova Březí” excursion is documented: it can be undertaken with an all-terrain pushchair and with dogs on a lead. In the summer months, the nearby natural swimming pool on the route to Libotyně also offers an opportunity to cool off.
Destinations in the surrounding area
The wider surroundings of Vlachovo Březí include the mountains Volovický vrch, Včelenský vrch, Libín and Boubín. The wider regional area also includes Chlumany as an ancient site and the Radomysl Mediumwave Radio Mast as a ruin. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between historic sites, religious architecture, summer recreation and landscape destinations.
