Ledenice – Bodies of Water, Crafts and Local History

Ledenice combines a remarkable local history with many small bodies of water and clearly recognizable traces of regional craft and cultural traditions. Those looking for a place with a variety of discoveries during their stay will find historic buildings, ponds within the built-up area, a private marionette museum, and routes for cyclists and pedestrians here.

Ponds, Routes and Water in the Townscape

Several small bodies of water within Ledenice’s built-up area are popular destinations for walks and fishing; in winter, they are also used for ice skating. These include Bagr, Dolní and Horní Hradský, Dolní and Horní Jáma, Lazna, Parčák and Slavíček. East of Ledenice lies Adamovský rybník, also known as Adamec. At probably at least 8 hectares, it is the largest pond in the Ledenicko area.

Travel to the area and further exploration can also be combined with cycling and walking routes. Cycle route 1050 has been newly signposted and now leads to Ledenice away from the main road. A combined route for pedestrians and cyclists has also been built from Ledenice to the junction with Ohrazeníčko. For a stay involving a variety of interests, these routes provide a practical complement to the historic sites in the town.

Church, Square and Traces of Former Rule

The Church of St. Lawrence was built around 1300 on the site of an older chapel. The Early Gothic building has a rectangular-ended presbytery, meaning an altar area designed accordingly, and was supplemented by a Baroque tower in 1782. Together with the rectory, the church is listed as an immovable cultural monument under ÚSKP number 41645/3-219. The monument also includes a gate and an enclosing wall.

On Ledenice’s square, beside the road in front of the school building, stands a stone pillory dating from 1778. It is an exceptional monument to the history of justice. Also on the square is the town hall, located in a former brewery facility where beer was brewed from the 16th century onward. Three statues of Saint John of Nepomuk add to the historic townscape; one of them dates from 1842 and was created by an unknown folk artist.

The former castle site lay immediately above Dolní-Hradský Pond. After the castle fell into ruin, the site was built over with houses. The district of Hrad, located southeast of the stream, also recalls a former manor through its name and is one of the few surviving references to it. A game preserve below the castle was mentioned in 1376; it was one of the oldest aristocratic game preserves in Bohemia and disappeared together with the castle during the Hussite Wars.

Marionettes and Living Craft Traditions

The private Fink Marionette Museum has a permanent puppet theater. Performances based on family scripts are staged there upon request. The operator still repairs old marionettes and makes new ones. The museum can be visited by ringing the bell or by calling 606 925 146 in advance. The site is therefore not merely a collection, but combines the exhibition with an ongoing craft activity.

Another facet of the town’s history is represented by the training center for practical cabinetmaking education. It builds on a local cabinetmaking tradition of more than one hundred years; an independent vocational school has existed in Ledenice since 1968. The virtual museum covers the living traditions of cabinetmaking and furniture production from the 19th century to the present. The former rectory garden with a small pond was transformed into a park-like recreational area in 2004.
