Nákří between Ponds, Birdlife and Village History

The listed Church of St. Peter and Paul characterizes Nákří just as much as the village pond Čekánek, where the traditional municipal fishing competition takes place. In the past, a country road from České Budějovice via Zaháj to Protivín and Písek ran through the village.

Ponds and Rare Waterbirds

An island in Velké Nákří Pond is home to the only breeding site of the spoonbill in the Czech Republic. Spoonbills have bred there regularly since 1991; in recent years, there have been three to four pairs (Platalea leucorodia). The artificial islands in Velké Nákří Pond provide habitat for birds. Many greylag geese and other waterbirds currently breed there.

Common and very rare waterbirds and marsh birds can often be found around Blatec and at other ornithological sites, including Nákří.

Water, Views and Trails

For a day by the water, Velký Luský Pond covers 26.00 ha and is suitable for swimming on the side locally referred to as “by the church.” Velké Nákří Pond covers 42.49 ha and is less suitable for swimming. The two bodies of water therefore differ both in area and in their suitability for swimming: Velký Luský offers the explicitly suitable swimming area, while Velké Nákří has a different focus, with its breeding site, artificial islands and waterbirds. Velké Nákří is therefore 16.49 ha larger than Velký Luský.

A stone viewpoint on the road to Loma offers a view of Nákří and the entire surrounding area, including Šumava. The Jakub Kubata Monument in the vicinity of Nákří is accessible year-round. You can reach it via a green-marked hiking trail from Zliv in the direction of Zbudov, which is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.

Church and Local History

The entire complex of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Nákří is listed as a protected monument. The Gothic church, designed in the Baroque style, was extended with a front tower in 1774 and restored in 1897 while preserving older valuable structural elements. Its architectural history thus combines a Gothic foundation with Baroque-oriented design, the later addition of the tower and restoration in the 19th century.

The history of the village extends beyond the church building. An old country road once ran through Nákří from České Budějovice via Zaháj onward to Protivín and Písek. The traditional municipal fishing competition for the Nákeřský kapr and the ČEZ fish takes place at the village pond Čekánek in Nákří. Thus, in addition to the historic transport route, local customs are also part of the village’s history.
