Ostrolovský Újezd – History, Nature and Trails

Between Renaissance, a Nature Monument and Marked Trails

Ostrolovský Újezd is an appealing choice if you would like to combine nature and history within a small area. The town is home to historic Renaissance buildings, while the surrounding area features a medieval castle site and a nature monument with spring snowflakes. Marked hiking trails, a cycling route for young children, viewpoints and a possible swimming spot complete the picture. This allows you to spend your days in different ways, alternating between culture, activity and scenery.

Historical Traces in the Town and Along the Stropnice

A Renaissance fortress from the late 16th century has been preserved in Ostrolovský Újezd. The Renaissance chateau still stands in the town centre. Kryštof Kořenský z Terešova built it in Ostrolovský Újezd in 1569. The history of the town goes back even further: Ostrolovský Újezd is first documented in the 14th century under its former name, Oujezdec.

A castle belonging to the Lords of Újezd already stood on a promontory above the Stropnice in the 14th century. The medieval castle site of Újezdec is also located in the surrounding area. It has been preserved as an earthwork fortification with massive ditches. About 500 metres east of Ostrolovský Újezd, on the road to Borovany, stands the Výklenková kaple. The small brick wayside chapel dates from the mid-19th century and has been protected as a cultural monument since 3 May 1958.

Hiking, Cycling and Discovering Nature

Ostrolovský Újezd lies at a junction of marked hiking trails. The surrounding area offers a varied landscape and beautiful viewpoints. If you would like to combine a historical discovery with a walk, the town is a starting point for visiting Jan Žižka’s birthplace in Trocnov: it lies about 2 km to the north and can be reached via the blue-marked trail.

For a cycling trip with younger children, the easy cycling route “Na kole okolo Borůvkovan – Borovanský dětský razítkový okruh” is suitable. It leads from Borovany along cycle route 1123 on the road towards Ostrolovský Újezd and is suitable for young children. The surrounding area also offers opportunities to pick mushrooms and blueberries. For swimming, the Beran pond, about 3 km away, is an option.

Local Details for Planning Your Day

A distinctive landmark in the town is the “Spilka” inn. It is located in the cellar of a former brewery. Depending on your interests, you can combine a stay in the town centre, historical sites and excursions into the surrounding area. The distances to Trocnov and Beran pond provide concrete reference points for planning different day trips, while the chapel on the road to Borovany forms another cultural and historical point east of the town.
