Rančice: Rural History, Water and Landscape

Rančice presents Czechia in a concentrated, rural form: farmsteads, listed architecture, waterways and a varied landscape with a high proportion of forests, meadows and bodies of water. Those who want to combine different impressions on a trip rather than focus on just one highlight will find historical details here as well as a designated cycling route and insights into modern agriculture.

A village with a remarkable architectural history

One of the most distinctive examples is the listed granary at house no. 3 in Rančice. It dates from 1780 and is a single-storey, elongated rectangular building with a gabled roof. Its structural fabric is particularly revealing: beneath a newer roof, the granary preserves stone surrounding walls and masonry gables belonging to an originally smaller building from the late 18th century. This makes it possible to see in one specific building how agricultural architecture has been preserved and altered over a longer period.

The granary does not stand in isolation in an arbitrary village setting. Rančice is a collection of farmsteads, including horse breeding operations. At the agricultural farm in Rančice, several horses were intended for visitors’ recreational riding. Nevertheless, one clear impression remains: Rančice is closely connected with its agricultural history and with the use of its farmsteads.

Water, meadows and a circuit route

The Rančický potok stream flows west of Rančice. North of Rančice, it flows into the Vltava from the right. This precise positional relationship makes the watercourse a fixed part of the geographical orientation around the village, without implying access to a particular section of the bank or a specific excursion opportunity.

For cyclists, the “Kolem Vltavy do ‚Koutů‘ a Blanského lesa” circuit route, which passes through Rančice, is relevant. It is also worth looking at the Kouty area between Kamenný Újezd and Zlatá Koruna. There is an unusually high concentration of monuments of late medieval rural architecture there. The area thus connects Rančice’s immediate rural character with a broader cultural and historical context, making it particularly suitable for a trip with an interest in landscape and regional architectural history.

Agriculture and regional products

Local agriculture can also be experienced directly in Rančice. At the Rančice Angus Farm, Aberdeen Angus beef cattle are kept organically. Meat and meat products are also sold directly from the farm there. These two facts give the village another distinct dimension alongside its architecture: agriculture is not only part of its historical structure but is also connected with regional products.
