Drahotieschitz – History and Forests in South Bohemia

Drahotieschitz combines village history with a forest-rich setting and distinctive traces of the region’s past. The village lies at an elevation of 526 m on the road between Ševětín and Dolní Bukovsko, on the edge of extensive forests between Hluboká nad Vltavou and Purkarec. History and visible landmarks in the village

Drahotěšice was first mentioned in writing on 23 October 1323. The village’s older history includes several houses on the village green featuring elements of South Bohemian folk Baroque. Another distinctive feature is the chapel dedicated to Saint Wenceslas next to the school. It was built in the first half of the 19th century.

The memory of the 20th century is also present in the village landscape. The Drahotěšice war memorial to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled in 1928. The memorial opposite the municipal office bears the names of the victims of the First World War. West and northwest of Drahotěšice, Slavic burial mounds have also been preserved in the forests, bearing witness to settlement in the area in the early Middle Ages.

Forests, quartz rocks and rural landscapes

The forests around Drahotěšice attract visitors because of their abundance of wild forest fruit. Until the 1930s, a 3 km-long and approximately 10 m-thick quartz ridge stood south of the village. After it was quarried, a ditch with quartz rocks remained, which can still be seen today. This landscape feature adds a geological peculiarity to the historic village setting, although the two impressions do not necessarily constitute the same travel experience.

U tří aronií and South Bohemian everyday culture

Another facet of the village can be found at U tří aronií. There is a nature-oriented garden in Drahotěšice with two traditional orchards and a semi-open courtyard at a 19th-century farm complex. U tří aronií also includes a reconstructed wooden granary that is over 300 years old. The orchards, farm complex and granary represent different aspects of rural everyday culture that come together in one place. Visitors who want to get to know regional produce can buy eggs, goat cheese, dried fruit and other agricultural products there.
