Watercourses, hills and a cultural centre

Trhové Sviny lies at the confluence of the Trhosvinenský and Farský streams. Here, the landscape transitions from the Třeboň Basin to hilly terrain towards Šumava. The Slepičí hory mountains are less than 10 kilometres away; Trhové Sviny is a starting point for hiking trails leading there. A stay here therefore allows you to combine local history, waterscapes and routes in the surrounding area.

The Městská památková zóna Trhové Sviny heritage zone is centred around a square with the town hall and burgher houses with arcades. A hexagonal stone fountain from 1868 also stands there. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was originally built in the Early Gothic style and later remodelled in the Late Gothic style. Inside, there is a Baroque altar with the Late Gothic “Trhovosvineská Madonna” from 1520.

History and crafts in the surrounding area

The cultural history continues beyond the town centre. In the surrounding area, the pilgrimage Church of the Holy Trinity was built between 1708 and 1710 as a Baroque church with a central layout, three altars and a hexagonal ambulatory. A triangular chapel contains a spring traditionally believed to have healing powers for eye ailments. The birthplace of Karel Valdauf is now a museum.

Buškův hamr is a preserved water-powered hammer mill dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The complex includes a forge, historic tools, a trip hammer, a grinding machine and a blower, all powered by three water wheels. Buškův hamr also houses the “Řemesla (nejen) na vodě” exhibition about crafts and craftsmen in Trhové Sviny and the surrounding area. In the vicinity of Trhové Sviny, the Kovářské dny traditionally take place on the third weekend in August, featuring blacksmithing demonstrations, a craft market and an entertainment programme.

Cycling tour, natural swimming pool and seasonal culture

For a longer cycling tour, the 63.7-kilometre “K rodišti Jana Žižky z Trocnova” route passes through Trhové Sviny. The route is considered a moderately difficult full-day tour. Another destination is the Velký rybník natural swimming pool on the outskirts of town in the direction of Nové Hrady. It is 1.5 kilometres from the town centre and can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. The natural swimming pool has a seasonal snack stand.

The Trhové Sviny Information Centre provides information about the town and its immediate and wider surroundings and organises exhibitions as well as educational, cultural and sporting events for visitors and local residents. From September to December, the Městské kulturní středisko Trhové Sviny offers six evenings featuring theatre, humour and music. In addition to excursions and sightseeing, this gives you the opportunity to enjoy cultural events within the town itself.
