Dolní Vltavice on the Lipno Reservoir

Dolní Vltavice combines an unusual history with water experiences and cycling routes along the Lipno Reservoir. The town lies on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Lipno Reservoir. This makes it a destination where historic traces, ferry connections, a beach and active pursuits are closely linked to the landscape.

Historic traces on the Lipno Reservoir

Large parts of historic Dolní Vltavice were flooded by the Lipno Reservoir; only a few newer houses on higher ground survived. This change continues to shape the character of the town today. Dolní Vltavice was first mentioned in writing in 1268 and was granted town status in 1505. Those interested in the development of Bohemian settlements will therefore find not an ordinary local history here, but a visible contrast between the older settlement pattern and the landscape transformed by the reservoir. The former Church of St Linhart is part of the area’s historical heritage. It was founded before 1355 and demolished before the Lipno Reservoir was flooded. A chapel near Dolní Vltavice was built in 1648 as a memorial to the victims of a plague epidemic and remodelled into its present form in 1753. Two protected lime trees, more than 350 years old, grow beside the chapel. In the 1950s, at least seven bunkers with loopholes for heavy machine guns protected the crossing over the Vltava in Dolní Vltavice. Details like these add an extra historical dimension to a stay alongside the water activities.

Ferry, cycling route and water activities

The Frymburk–Dolní Vltavice–Frymburk round trip takes one hour. Bicycles are carried as luggage on the Dolní Vltavice ferry route. The Schwarzenbergská cesta is also of interest to cyclists: it runs from Černá v Pošumaví via the ferry connection in Dolní Vltavice to Kyselov. This makes it possible to combine the route with a crossing of the Lipno Reservoir, without limiting the excursion exclusively to the shore. A sandy-green beach in Dolní Vltavice lies between the Dolní Vltavice ferry and the jetty of Hotel Resort Relax. At the beach of Resort RELAX in Dolní Vltavice, pedal kayaks, paddleboards and motorboats, for which no boating licence is required, are available for hire. Those who want to include water sports in their travel plans will therefore find several different ways to get around on the water. In certain wind directions, Dolní Vltavice is considered the only suitable place for windsurfing; the waves there are considered rather average.

Choose Dolní Vltavice as your accommodation destination

When looking for accommodation, you can first decide what you want to focus on: historical discoveries, a ferry ride, a cycling tour or a day by the water. Dolní Vltavice is a suitable search destination for travellers who do not want to view these different aspects separately. This is particularly useful for families whose interests shift between culture, activity and water, allowing them to plan a varied stay without making any one activity the sole focus. For other destinations in your search area, you can also view Plánicka, Muckov, Radslav, Mokrá and Blizna.
