Mokrá: Graphite Mining, Josefova štola and Cycling Route

Mokrá combines an unusually tangible mining history with a cycling route that leads to Olšina Pond. Those who want to connect historical traces, technical monuments and a clearly described route can find several different starting points here for planning their own trip.

Graphite Mining as a Defining Part of the History

In the area of Mokrá and its entire surroundings, graphite mining comprised twelve shafts with depths of 40 to 70 metres. Development accelerated particularly after the graphite boom of 1846, which led to a significant expansion of mining in Mokrá. The history of the village is therefore closely connected with the extraction of this mineral, without its industrial past consisting solely of individual dates.

Josefova Å¡tola and the Route to the Portal

One particularly tangible place connected with this history is Josefova Å¡tola, a drainage adit dating from 1897. As a drainage adit, it served to divert water from the underground mining area. A newly created gravel educational trail leads to the portal of Josefova Å¡tola and makes the historic site accessible via a specially described route.

By Bicycle via Muckov to Olšina Pond

The Rybník Olšina cycling route offers a different perspective. It leads from Černá along the Muckov limestone quarries to Muckov and then turns towards Mokrá. From Mokrá, the cycling route continues to Olšina Pond. In the wider surroundings of Mokrá, the Rybářská bašta near Olšina features an exhibition about fishing and hunting.

Chapel and Historical Connections to the Village

The chapel in the village is also part of Mokrá’s history. It dates from 1849 and was saved from complete deterioration and restored in 1999. This makes it an independent historical point of interest alongside the remains of graphite mining.

Mokrá is also shaped by its older settlement history. Mokrá is considered the most important village of the Hirzův Újezd settlement association, which is also called Mokerský Újezd. The settlement association bears the name of the burgrave Hirzo, who owned the area before 1263. The founding charter of Zlatá Koruna Monastery mentions this ownership for the first time. The history of the village therefore reaches back to the 13th century and complements the later evidence of graphite mining with an older historical reference.
