Discover Svojšín

If you would like to combine culture and landscapes along manageable routes, Svojšín offers distinctive points of interest: Svojšín Chateau, the Mže Valley, historic religious buildings and two 3 km routes to viewpoints. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore combine different ideas for day trips without reducing the town to a single excursion destination.

Chateau, churches and traces of history

Svojšín Chateau was built in 1723 under Count Jan Václav Příchovský on the site of an older building. The one-storey chateau features a passage accessible through a stone portal, with preserved leather wallpaper and Baroque marble fireplaces. Two ornamental gardens adjoin the chateau and complement the historic impression of the ensemble.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is dated to the mid-12th century based on its masonry technique using large sandstone blocks and is considered one of the most important monuments of its kind in south-west Bohemia. The Chapel of St Nicholas also stands by the railway station. From 2017 to 2023, it was restored at its original location and in its original form using surviving photographs.

Another historic destination is the Jewish cemetery in Řebří. It was declared a cultural monument in 2007. To this day, 143 gravestones have been preserved there, including one from 1742. The surrounding area therefore brings together chateau architecture, sacred architectural history and Jewish cultural heritage as different ways of exploring the region.

Routes through the Mže Valley

Svojšín lies in the Mže Valley. There, the river has cut through predominantly wooded hilly terrain; in the lowlands, it is accompanied by meadows with diverse flora and fauna. You can experience this landscape directly on the “Skalní defilé” educational trail. The route starts at Svojšín Chateau and is designed as a 3 km out-and-back walk. At the end, there is a view of the Svojšín Basin and the meanders of the Mže.

A second option leads to the viewpoint on Tannenberg. It is located at a cross marking the site of a former forest chapel and can be reached from Svojšín Chateau via a 3 km out-and-back route. You first follow the red hiking trail markings and then the green ones. The historic designation of the site remains important here: it refers to the location of a former forest chapel, not to a building that still exists today.

Getting there and choosing a starting point

For travel by train, Svojšín railway station is a useful point of reference. It lies on Line 178 between Plzeň and Cheb and on Line 186 between Svojšín and Bor. Access to the station building or passenger shelter and to all platforms is step-free. When choosing accommodation in Svojšín, you can therefore take the railway connection into account alongside the routes that begin at the chateau.

In spring, the Mže can be navigated on the section from Pavlovice to Svojšín and, where applicable, farther on to Stříbro. This adds a seasonal activity on the water to the cultural and hiking options. The possible continuation to Stříbro explicitly depends on the particular section.
