Skořice on the Edge of the Brdy Forests

Skořice connects the Brdy landscape with traces of village history. The foothill settlement lies at an altitude of 596 metres on the edge of the Brdy forests. Nature, cycling, and cultural discoveries represent different facets of the destination: distinctive landscape formations, a Baroque church visible from far away, memorial sites in the centre of the village, and historical traces throughout the wider cadastral area.

Landscape Between Three Valleys

The setting of Skořice is shaped by the surrounding valleys and watercourses. The Račí potok flows in from Trokavec through the southern valley. To the west, the Bystrý potok runs through a valley, through the forest below the forester’s house and on to a mill. North of Skořice, the Ledný potok flows through the valley below Dubina towards Dobřív. In Dobřív, it joins the Padrťský potok, which is also called Černý.

Skořice’s elevation and proximity to the Brdy forests bring relatively harsh climatic conditions, including increased rainfall and snowfall. This characteristic is as much a part of the landscape as the wooded outskirts and valleys. The church acquired its present form through reconstruction in 1677. It is therefore not only a distinctive landmark, but also a specific destination for anyone wishing to include historic buildings in a cycling trip or walk around the village.

The Borovno–Dobřív cycling route passes the Church of St. Wenceslas in Skořice, where the church is listed as a point of interest. The route thus combines a sporting perspective with a cultural stop, without the church appearing merely as a backdrop to the landscape. The cadastral area of Skořice also contains the ruins of Dršťka Castle, also known as Losumberk. They are listed as a significant archaeological site. The cemetery with the grave of opera singer Ludmila Komancová is located beside the Church of St. Wenceslas. Five memorials stand in the village square of Skořice. The memorial to the victims of the First World War comes from the former village of Padrť in the Brdy Military Training Area. It stands in the park on the village square in front of the municipal office and was brought to Skořice from Záběhlá by local residents after 2000.

Individual life stories are also recorded in the village landscape. The memorial plaque to Alois Vavroch is located on house no. 91 in Skořice, where he was born and lived. The memorial to the victims of the Second World War in Skořice commemorates Alois Vavroch, Josef Pavlovič, Jan Vaněk, and Václav Krajdl.
