Holoubkov

Holoubkov combines marked trails, two ponds situated in different settings, and an unusually rich industrial history. If you would like to combine nature experiences with cultural discoveries during a stay in the Czech Republic, the town offers several clearly distinct points of interest – from water and forests to historical evidence of iron smelting and machine building.

Ponds, Watercourse, and Trails Through the Landscape

The Holoubkovský rybník is a 14.5-hectare pond. It extends from the center of Holoubkov for approximately one kilometer in the direction of Mýto. The Hamerský rybník, also known as Lamacký or Lamanický, presents a different landscape setting. It lies in the forest about 0.5 kilometers below Holoubkov. These two descriptions place the bodies of water differently within their surroundings: one pond is described from the town center, while the other is located below the town in the forest. The Holoubkovský potok is considered the most important watercourse in this part of the Rokycany District. Several designated route connections are documented for active days. Cycle Route 2158 leads from Rokycany to Strašice via Holoubkov. The red KČT hiking trail 0209 from Rokycany to Zbiroh also passes through the town. The trail network is complemented by a blue connecting route that runs through Holoubkov to the Nad Mýtem trail signpost.

Industrial History with Bohemian Connections

The history of Holoubkov is closely linked to iron smelting and the development of ironworks and machine-building companies, which rank among the oldest in Bohemia. A specific testimony to this development is a new blast furnace beside the Holoubkovský rybník, completed in 1662 on behalf of the royal chamber. The history of the local machine-building works also goes back a long way. In 1840, it produced its first manually operated lathe and is considered one of the oldest manufacturers of machine tools in the Czech Republic. The town's industrial past can therefore be understood not only through a general development, but through two precisely documented milestones: the blast furnace of 1662 and the manually operated lathe of 1840.

Cultural Monuments and Regional Discoveries

The local cultural history includes the Markova vila in Holoubkov, house number 123. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument. An archaeological area in Category I has also been designated in Holoubkov. Archaeological finds from prehistory and from the Middle Ages through the modern period have been documented or are reasonably suspected there. The classification describes the documented archaeological status, not automatically a current opportunity to visit. In the center of Holoubkov there is a self-service stall that is regularly restocked with seasonally available products of its own from Farma Liblín. A local event that took place is also recorded: The event “Slet a pálení čarodějnic” was held for the 14th time and included a costume competition, a disco, prize competitions, grilling sausages, and catering. In the wider area south of Holoubkov rises the Trhoň massif. Together with the surrounding forests, it forms Trhoň Nature Park. Trails run through the forests over picturesque slopes with views of the surrounding area. Thus, the documented character of the destination extends from the water and trails around the town into a wooded landscape with regional industrial and cultural history.
