Osek – Cultural History and Protected Nature

Osek combines an unusually layered local history with protected natural and geological sites. Between medieval ecclesiastical architecture, Renaissance history, evidence of iron extraction and the Osek – rybník Labutinka Natura 2000 site, it offers a destination for anyone who does not wish to view culture and landscape separately. Historical Traces Around Osek

One of the oldest buildings is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which dates from the second half of the 13th century. Osek's original Gothic fortress also has a long history of development: in the second half of the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Kamýk Chateau dates from 1750. Today, only two perimeter walls remain, so the site is characterised primarily by its historical context and the surviving remains.

The Jewish cemetery Židovský hřbitov occupies a distinctive location. It lies directly in Osek on the eastern slope of the rocky hill with the ruins of Kamýk Chateau. The cemetery contains 101 gravestones, fragments or plinths. This site thus adds another visible testament to the past to Osek's architectural history.

Osek Chateau is also part of the locality's cultural profile. The building is an immovable cultural monument. For planning a visit, however, it is important to note that the chateau is closed to the public. It can be seen only to a limited extent through the gate in the southwest and from the northwest over the gardens. The chateau should therefore be regarded as a historical landmark with restricted visibility, not as a freely accessible sight.

Almost Four Centuries of Ironworking

Osek has an almost four-century-long tradition of iron ore mining and ironworking. Its beginnings date to around 1568. A specific insight into this development is documented for 1673: at that time, Osek had one blast furnace and two forge hammers. Iron ore was mined here until the deposits were exhausted in 1850. These dates make the industrial past a subject in its own right alongside the church, fortress and chateau.

Labutinka, Vosek and the Barrandien Geopark

Osek's natural side is first apparent in the Osek – rybník Labutinka area. It is a Natura 2000 site of European importance covering approximately 14 hectares. The approximate area figure is intentionally retained. Vosek provides a geological focus, and its cadastral area includes Osek u Rokycan. Vosek is a national nature monument and at the same time part of the Barrandien National Geopark.

The site is characterised by a thick weathering mantle with siliceous concretions up to 50 centimetres in diameter. These originate predominantly from sediments of the Šárka Formation and partly from the Dobrotivá Formation. The concretions contain fossils and a highly diverse fauna. For travellers with different interests, Osek therefore offers several clearly distinct themes: historic buildings, Jewish cultural history, the development of iron mining, and natural history and geology.
