Čilá – Trails, Forests and Cultural Heritage on the Berounka

Čilá lies directly within the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area and combines a protected hilly landscape with trails, riverbanks and a distinctive historic village character. For families who want to combine different interests during their stay, the options range from short discoveries in the village and marked hiking trails to a route with information boards and cultural and historical destinations in the surrounding area.

Forest Landscape and Trails Around Čilá

Apart from agricultural fields and grazed meadows, the area around Čilá is heavily forested. Mature mixed forests with beech, oak, spruce, larch and pine trees predominate. The village lies in hilly terrain above the right bank of the Berounka at an elevation of 332 m above sea level. Downstream from Čilá to Roztoky u Křivoklátu, the river has deeply incised banks with rocky sections. The landscape impressions therefore differ considerably between the forest, open areas and the river valley.

Čilá offers opportunities for hiking. A red-marked hiking trail runs through the village, leading in one direction to Rakovník and in the other to Roztoky u Křivoklátu. Another specific hiking option is the Čilá–Skryjská jezírka–(Ostrovec)–Zbiroh route. It leads to the Skryjská jezírka, where hikers can learn more from information boards. A cycle route also runs through Čilá, making the village suitable for travel planning with different activity focuses.

The Camino de Santiago and the Pilgrimage Landscape

The northern branch of the Camino de Santiago runs through the valley below Čilá near Slapnice. Its Czech section leads from Zbraslav near Prague to Železná, where it crosses the Czech-German border at Parku smíření and connects to the route to Nuremberg. Čilá is therefore part of a landscape where local trails meet a cross-border pilgrimage route. Those who wish to include the Camino de Santiago in their travel plans will find a northern section here, along with other hiking connections.

Historic Village Character and Destinations in Skryje

Several historic residential and farm buildings also stand in the centre of Čilá. The historic residential and farm buildings were built of wood and covered with thatch. A wooden cross stands on the site where a bell tower once stood. A memorial in the centre also commemorates the victims of the First World War.

Skryje is 2.5 km from Čilá. The village can be reached via a paved road through the valley of the Zbirožský potok (Slapnice) or via a marked hiking trail through the Skryjská jezírka. In the immediate vicinity of Čilá, the distinctive Baroque Church of the Archangel Michael, dating from 1713, stands there. This makes it possible to combine a nature experience, a route and a specific cultural and historical destination in Skryje.
