Discover Pavlovsko: Archaeology, Nature and Technology

Pavlovsko combines archaeological traces, a protected rocky landscape and industrial heritage to create a variety of experiences. North of the town lie both the Vrch Žďár archaeological site and the Žďár Nature Reserve, each about 2 km from Pavlovsko. This means that during your trip you can choose between history, observing nature and a route with panoramic views.

Archaeology with tangible traces

The Vrch Žďár archaeological site gives the surrounding area a historical focus. In the Pavlovsko archaeological area, grey, reduction-fired and glazed ceramic fragments were found in 1974 when a trench was being dug by J. Zikmund. Written references associated with the Pavlovsko archaeological area date from the 18th century. For your visit, this means more than just a historical date: it is a place where the past becomes accessible through tangible finds and recorded evidence.

Rocks, beeches and expansive views

The Žďár Nature Reserve protects natural beech stands on a rocky hill with extensive scree slopes. The protected landscape also includes a block field with a remarkable lichen flora. Those who do not want to experience nature only on level ground will find a distinctly contrasting landscape of forest, rock and rubble here.

A separate way to explore this landscape is the route “Po Žďárských studánkách přes vrchol Žďár”. It leads to the Nad Pavlovskem spring and runs along the ridge to the summit of Žďár. The rock formations on the summit of Vrch Žďár offer expansive views. However, climbing and access to certain rocks are subject to specific time and eligibility requirements: permission to climb in the Žďár Nature Reserve is valid annually from 1 July to 31 December. For persons meeting condition 1, permission also applies to entering the “Malý a Velký oltář” and “Vyhlídková skála” rocks outside marked paths and climbing on these rocks in the Pavlovsko cadastral area.

Industrial history and living tradition

Another cultural highlight is the Vodní hamr Dobřív, a fully operational technical monument dating from the late 19th century. The exhibition there focuses on the history of ironworking in the Podbrdsko region and metallurgy in Dobřív. This adds a vivid industrial-historical perspective to a day spent exploring the landscape.

Hamernický den takes place every year on the third Saturday in May on the grounds of the Vodní hamr Dobřív. During the event, visitors can watch apprentices compete in the Dobřívský cvoček skills competition. Another historical attraction is the Jindřich Mošna Memorial Hall: its exhibition was established in 2005 in a house formerly occupied by his wife's family.
