Útěchov

Útěchov combines its proximity to Moravská Třebová with a landscape where the river, geological formations and traces of past settlements lie close together. The village is located 2 km south of Moravská Třebová in a valley running from south to north, through which the Třebůvka flows. Between Kamenná hora and Ovčiny

The eastern side of Útěchov is shaped by the west-facing slope of Kamenná hora. Its highest point reaches 577 metres. The Kamenné hory mountain range dates from the Cretaceous period and consists of sandstone and marl. This gives the landscape a clearly recognisable geological character that distinguishes it from the western side of the village.

There lies the undulating landscape of Ovčiny, formerly known as Ovčácké údolí and geologically assigned to the Permian period. The western spur of the Kamenné hory range also includes Kouzelná hora. Because of its distinctive shape, local residents also call it Ošatková hora.

Hrádek and the History of the Village

Slavic settlement has been documented on Hrádek hill between Útěchov and Dlouhá Loučka. Towards the end of this period, during the Břetislav era, a hillfort was built there – a fortified site consisting of ramparts and ditches. The fortifications at Hrádek were later remodelled: ditches were dug and new ramparts, as well as the central stronghold and outer bailey, were built up.

Terrain traces on the southern edge of Útěchov also point to a former water fortress. Ditches and ramparts mark its location; archaeological finds date it to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. These traces are historical evidence and do not indicate that the site can be visited today. The village's architectural heritage also includes the former fief farmstead, the oldest building in Útěchov. It was once the seat of the feudal tenants of the Moravská Třebová estate.

The Útěchov belfry is currently in a dilapidated condition and is not used for ringing.

River, Village History and Regional Memory

The Třebůvka flows through Útěchov. In summer, it is usually a quiet stream, but during the spring snowmelt or severe storms it can turn into a raging watercourse. The village's relationship with water is also reflected in its history: when the Třebůvka was regulated in 1935, five bridges and three footbridges had to be built.

A carnival feast known as a “pig-slaughter feast” formed part of the historical everyday culture. Jitrnice, barley soup, sausages and meat were served. Another find takes us even further back: an elongated stone grinder from the Neolithic period comes from the Útěchov land register and is kept in the museum in Moravská Třebová.
