From a Forest Strip Village to a Developed Cultural Landscape

In the course of the High Medieval colonization, an extensive forest strip village developed around the Sloupnický potok. It is one of the most extensive village foundations in the Orlickoústecko area. This development gives Sloupnice a historical framework in which the individual sights can be understood as different testimonies to the history of the place.

Architecture and Churches as Special Discoveries

The Sokolovna in Sloupnice is particularly distinctive. It was built in 1930 as a local example of sports architecture by the native architect Vojtěch Vanický. The building is in the style of Czech architectural modernism, which was influenced by Dutch brick architecture, and has been protected as a heritage monument since 3 November 2014. In addition to sports activities, the Sokolovna hosts theater performances, balls, concerts and other cultural events.

The Church of Saint Nicholas complements this picture with a sacred building featuring several historical layers. The rural church without a tower has Gothic origins and was rebuilt in the Baroque style around 1712 to attain its present form. The Evangelical Church in Sloupnice documents the emergence of tolerance churches shortly after the promulgation of the Toleration Patent of 1781. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk also has an unusual form: it is designed as an open chapel in the shape of a baldachin over a Baroque statue from 1769.

The town's culture of remembrance includes the Socha Svobody. The monument to the victims of the First World War dates from the 1920s and, after the Second World War, was also dedicated to the victims of that war from the surrounding area.

Hiking with Different Route Lengths

For active days, the Pochod Sloupenskými lesy offers hiking routes of 8, 15 and 25 km. The three distances represent different hiking scopes and provide a concrete framework for planning tours. In addition, the local hiking club organizes hikes in the area around Sloupnice. When weather conditions are suitable, cross-country skiing excursions in the surrounding area are also part of the club's offerings. Thus, alongside historical discoveries, organized outdoor activities are also at the heart of the place, with cross-country skiing expressly dependent on suitable weather conditions.
