Křenov – Discover Baroque Culture and Hiking Trails

Křenov combines impressive Baroque culture with marked hiking trails and an early medieval heritage. This creates a destination where historical discoveries, visits to small museums and trails of varying lengths through the surrounding area can be combined.

Baroque Churches and Distinctive Village Scenery

A central cultural landmark is the Chapel of St. Isidore. It was built in 1707 on the initiative of the local priest and patron Johann Benedikt Schindler. Inside, you will find richly decorated stucco with acanthus motifs and figurative wall paintings. The restoration of the sculptural and painted furnishings was completed in 2015.

Křenov’s sacred history also includes a parish church dating from 1729. Together with the vicarage, it forms an important urban ensemble. The Baroque vicarage is an architecturally valuable, two-storey rural building with a mansard roof, built on the village green. A statue of the Immaculata dating from before 1734 stands beside the vicarage.

The Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist also shapes the village’s appearance. Its Baroque furnishings date from 1730. A stone pillory dating from 1732 has also been preserved in the centre of Křenov. Another notable work is the Baroque sculptural group of the Virgin Mary, St. John the Baptist and St. John of Nepomuk. It was created in 1727 and added to the list of cultural monuments in 1964.

From the Museum to Křenovské hradisko

The Fara Křenov Museum presents visitors with the life, culture and work of a clergyman in a small town from the 18th century to the present day. In this way, it complements the churches and historic buildings with a more everyday-historical perspective. The Sedmikráska educational trail, by contrast, takes an interactive approach: its quiz is completed directly on a smartphone.

A particularly distinctive destination is Křenovské hradisko. It is an early medieval fortified settlement on a flat elevation. The fortifications enclose an area of approximately 20 hectares. This gives the site a clear contrast with the Baroque buildings in the village and adds a much older chapter of history to the cultural walk.

Hiking Trails with Different Starting Points

If you would like to explore Křenov on foot, several clearly differentiated route descriptions are available. An approximately 9.5-kilometre hiking route from Křenov to Jevíčko follows yellow hiking trail markings. It passes along Křenovské hradisko towards Mařín.

A second, approximately 13-kilometre hiking route leads from Moravská Třebová to Křenov. It follows red hiking trail markings and passes Slídový vrch and Arnoštovský vrch. For arrival from the direction of Hřebeč, an approximately 14-kilometre route is also described. It shares sections with cycle route 4029 before descending to Křenov.

Watercourse on the Edge of the Village

The Malonínský potok flows southwest of Křenov. The Obecní rybník pond is located along its course. This watercourse and pond complement the historic sights with a landscape feature and give the village, alongside its churches, vicarage and village green, another distinctive accent.
