Slatina

Slatina combines visible local history with a landscape in which the church, orchard, railway line, and cycling route appear closely interconnected. The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, “svatého Petra a Pavla,” is particularly distinctive: it stands on a hill, is visible from the surrounding area, and has Romanesque origins dating back to the first half of the 13th century. As a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, it gives the village a distinct historical character.

Church and Historical Traces

Several different layers of history can be discovered around the church. The elongated house next to the church has been preserved, is well maintained, and is known as U Stratílků. It bears this name today, but the building was first mentioned as early as 1610—at that time as Panský hostinec. The current name U Stratílků and the historical name Panský hostinec refer to the same preserved building. This creates not merely an individual point of interest, but a small connection between sacred history and a traditional ensemble of buildings.

The hill itself is also part of Slatina’s character. An orchard on the hill near the church contributes to the old-world atmosphere. Numerous dry-grassland species grow on the marlstone in the orchard area. Families visiting the area can combine different ways of exploring it: the visible church, the history of the U Stratílků house, and the landscape around the orchard.

Views and Landscape

The church can be seen from beyond Slatina as well. The painter Josef Kubizňák (1909–1990) particularly appreciated the view of it from the slope below the railway line from Choceň to Vysoké Mýto, from the village of Krátké lány. This traditional perspective makes it clear that the building’s impact can also be understood within the wider landscape. The railway line runs south of Slatina and thus forms another distinctive element of the local surroundings.

Getting Around by Bus, Train and Bicycle

Transport connections are also part of the village’s character and help with orientation in the area. Bus services run through Slatina, with two stops. The railway line from Choceň to Vysoké Mýto runs to the south. The cycling tour “Vysokomýtskou kotlinou na Vraclavský hřbet” offers a specific way to explore the landscape on two wheels. Its Vysoké Mýto–Slatina section uses Cycle Route 18 and Road 3574 and is listed as 3.6 km long. The following Slatina–Sruby section follows Cycle Route 4230 and covers 1.4 km. The first section, at 3.6 km, is longer than the subsequent 1.4 km. Slatina is the shared reference point of the two sections: the first section ends here, and the second begins here.

Local Community Life

Another aspect of the village is the Český svaz chovatelů, which has been based in Slatina since 1983. Numerous cultural and sporting events take place on its grounds.
