Velká Skrovnice: Village History, Landscape and Special Heritage

Velká Skrovnice combines a landscape set in a gentle valley with an unusually dense succession of historic landmarks. The origins of the present-day village are dated to the 13th century, while the first written record of Skrovnice dates from 1371. Those looking for a place with a tangible village history and tranquil landscape impressions will therefore find various points of connection for their own exploration.

Valley, Slope and the Brodec Stream

Velká Skrovnice lies at an elevation of about 415 metres in a gentle valley. The landscape includes the Brodec stream: it rises below the slope near Velká Skrovnice, flows through a pond, and continues in the direction of Malé Lhoty. This sequence makes the course of the waterway a specific landscape detail that can be connected with the history of the village. Another indication of the long settlement history is a stone axe hammer from around 3000 BC found in Velká Skrovnice.

Chapel, Crosses and Places of Remembrance

A prominent historical landmark is the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1912. A cemetery was established around the chapel in 1934. The village also features several individual monuments with precisely dated histories: the statue of Saint Wenceslas near house no. 70 was erected in 1870 and restored in 2019. The stone cross near house no. 19 dates from 1885 and gave the “U křížku” bus stop its name.

The stone cross near house no. 8 also tells of changes spanning several generations. It dates from 1862, was re-erected in 1991, and most recently restored in 2019. For a stay in which not just a single building but many small historical clues are of interest, these dates provide a clear orientation. They show that the history of Velká Skrovnice is visible at various points throughout the village.

The War Memorial of Velká Skrovnice

The sandstone war memorial commemorates the fallen and missing citizens of the municipality with a stylised soldier figure and inscribed stone tablets. A new path made of sandstone stepping slabs leads to the memorial. It was renovated in 2024.

A Special Opportunity at Centrum Oáza

Centrum Oáza has a filtered firefighting-water reservoir measuring approximately 25 × 15 metres. Swimming is permitted in this reservoir at your own risk.

Velká Skrovnice is therefore especially suitable for a travel idea that combines landscape, local history, and individual discoveries. You can experience your stay through the valley and stream landscape, place the dated landmarks in the village into context, or include Centrum Oáza as a separate item on your itinerary.
