Řetová – Valley, Cultural Monuments and Nature

Řetová combines a wooded valley, protected cultural monuments and a remarkable diversity of landscape features. The cadastral area extends from an elevation of 390 to 569.5 metres. The regulated Husí krk stream shapes the valley and flows into the Tichá Orlice. This brings different holiday themes together in a compact destination for families who want to combine nature, activity and discoveries of cultural history.

Valley, forests and protected landscape

The valley near Řetová is bordered by forests on both sides. North of Road II/360, Orlice Nature Park extends into the cadastral area at its edge. Several registered significant landscape features, known as VKPs, also make the surroundings interesting for nature excursions. East of Řetová lies the “Jalovce” VKP, with an isolated population of the endangered common juniper on a former pasture. The meadows on the cadastral boundary between Řetová and Přívrat are home to the “Opukové osypy” VKP, with marl outcrops and rare thermophilic plants. At the forest edge on the southern slope of Andrlův Chlum lies the “Opučák” VKP, with an abandoned marl quarry and rare thermophilic and calciphilous plants. Southwest of Řetová, the “Bromion” VKP preserves thermophilic grassland communities and a diverse insect fauna at the forest edge. In addition, four designated natural monuments in the form of protected commemorative trees are located in the cadastral area.

Cultural monuments in the village

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, dating from 1755, is a defining feature of Řetová. A protected boundary wall surrounds the church, and the ossuary near the church is one of the protected immovable cultural monuments in Řetová. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, which is protected as a cultural monument, is also part of the historic villagescape. The mangling and bleaching house at house number 137 in Řetová is another protected cultural monument. This makes it possible to shape a stay not only around the landscape and routes, but also around several independent testimonies to the history of the village.

Routes and activities depending on the season

The “Around Řetová” educational trail (NS) is one of the tourist routes designated in Řetová. Several marked cycle paths run through the cadastral area, adding to the opportunities to explore the landscape actively. Řetová also has a multi-purpose sports field with an ice rink and facilities for tennis and volleyball. When snow conditions are sufficient, a groomed cross-country ski trail runs along the eastern ridge between Andrlův Chlum and the Kozlovská rozhledna observation tower. The trail creates a clear seasonal difference in travel planning: cycle paths and the educational trail are complemented by a winter cross-country skiing option whose use depends on snow conditions.
