Discover Lukavice: Church, Nature and Cycle Path in the Czech Republic

Lukavice combines local history, protected landscapes and active discoveries within a compact area. Its present form was created through additions in 1639, 1705 and 1721; the tower was modified in 1878. This makes it possible to see in a single building how local history has been reflected in architecture over several centuries.

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1865, and the six protected lime trees surrounding it also form part of the area’s cultural character. The entrance gate to the original cemetery is another detail in its own right: it dates from 1699 and is made of coarse-grained sandstone. The “Muchova lípa” represents an unusual connection between landscape and art. It is associated with Alfons Mucha’s painting “Přísaha Omladiny pod Slovanskou lípou,” in which the unusual growth of the once-mighty tree was artistically depicted.

Forest and Scenic Hills

Šafranice offers a clear connection to the landscape for quieter parts of a stay. The protected mixed forest is characterised by mighty oak trees. From Mechnáč Hill, located 1.5 km from the railway stop, the view extends across the cadastral area of Lukavice and, in clear weather, as far as the Orlické Mountains. A walk around the wooded Karlovice Hill opens up views of the surrounding towns and up to eight church towers. This allows you to combine different ideas for a day—forest, distant views and local history—without losing sight of Lukavice’s character.

Getting There and Further Activities

Lukavice v Čechách railway station is located on railway line 021 and is integrated into the IREDO integrated transport system. The station building or passenger shelter is accessible to people with disabilities.

The Žamberk–Lukavice–Letohrad cycle path connects Žamberk and Letohrad via Lukavice. Recreational fishing is possible in the Mostiska and Záhořský rybník ponds. Tennis courts can also be reserved at Sokolovna, the municipality’s venue for sporting, cultural and social events. The museum in Lukavice offers tours outside the stated opening hours by prior arrangement.
