Discover Nové Hrady U Skutče
Nové Hrady U Skutče combines an exceptional castle complex with museums, landscaped gardens and a variety of outdoor discoveries. At its heart is Zámek Nové Hrady, a unique Rococo building dating from 1777 that has never been remodelled. As a result, historic architecture, collections and diverse garden spaces come together here within a compact thematic setting.
Castle and special collections
The castle complex is open to the public and offers guided tours of the interiors and castle gardens. The castle tour also includes the exhibition “Umění nábytku v proměnách století”. It presents Central European furniture art from the Baroque period to Art Nouveau, complementing the castle visit with an insight into different eras of design.
Another unusual collection is presented by the “Motory & Pedály” Museum: more than 160 motorbikes, mopeds and bicycles with auxiliary motors from around the world are on display. The museum is housed in a historic Baroque barn and extends over three floors. Important for planning purposes, access is exclusively via wooden staircases; the exhibition is therefore not wheelchair accessible.
The “Galerie anglických klobouků” gallery displays more than 100 women's hats in various shapes, materials and colours. Visitors can try on some of the hats. The hat exhibition is located in the orangery opposite the labyrinth; a parrot aviary can also be seen there. Thus, alongside architecture and history, the castle complex offers collections with a particularly visual and engaging character.
Gardens, arboretum and outdoor experiences
The castle gardens are elegantly designed and include numerous water features, including ponds, cascades, fountains and water-lily pools. The castle garden can be visited independently of a castle visit. The castle complex also includes a labyrinth made of clipped arborvitae, which forms a separate part of the visit.
On the castle hill there is a children's playground with benches, a pavilion, a wooden children's castle, a viewing platform and perennial beds. The arboretum, established in 2019, contains 200 species and cultivars of woody plants. There, you can walk among young trees on mown paths and rest in a wooden pavilion. The farm belonging to the castle keeps red deer and fallow deer, which visitors can view.
Active experiences are also part of what the destination offers: the stables in Nové Hrady provide riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders. The castle complex's open-air amphitheatre also hosts concerts and performances under the open sky.
More culture in Nové Hrady
In addition to the castle, Nové Hrady is home to the Baroque Church of St James, dating from 1724. A Stations of the Cross route from 1767 adds to the historic sights. This makes it possible to extend a visit to the castle complex with further evidence of the town's history.
