Discover Písečná: Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Písečná
Písečná combines trails through a green landscape with distinctive reminders of the village’s history. The Potočnice stream flows through the entire village; wooded valleys, a hiking trail with stops and a named cycling route offer different ways to explore the area. There is also a historic mill and a Baroque statue. You can shape your stay around nature, outdoor activities or culture.
Hiking, Water and Landscapes
The “Pěší trasa” is a local hiking trail with twelve stops between the cadastral boundaries of Písečná. Several tourist routes also pass through the village. One published hiking route runs from Dolní Dobrouč railway station via Písečná to Žamberk railway station. If you include these stops in your plans, check timetables and trail markings separately.
The Šuškovský pond covers five hectares and lies in a wooded valley. On the way there is a rest area with a drinking-water spring and an Indian totem pole. As facilities on site may change, check the condition of the rest area before your visit. From the Kozinec ridge, you can enjoy views of Žampach and the panorama of the Orlické Mountains. Near Šušek, in a wooded valley, is a rock formation of Permian origin known as “Babizna.”
Mature vegetation also helps define Písečná: several notable trees have been added to the state list of protected trees. This means that, alongside the trails and bodies of water, distinctive trees are also part of the village landscape. The area’s varied features give hikes different themes, from wooded valleys to the views from the Kozinec ridge.
Cycling Routes and Route Planning
The 1,185-metre shared cycling and pedestrian path Valdštejn–Šušek connects Písečná and Hnátnice. It joins the Letohrad–Ústí nad Orlicí cycling route and ends at the dam of the Šušek pond. For planning, both the specific path length and its named connections between places and routes are useful.
Koupaliště Písečná has a capacity of 300 people in the 2026 season. This figure applies to the 2026 season; it is not a statement about later seasons. Along with the hiking and cycling routes, the swimming pool adds another option for your stay, without requiring you to fit every activity into a single day.
The Mill and Local History
The present-day rectory in Písečná was built by the Jesuits in 1726. A Baroque statue near the church dates from 1717. These dates relate to different elements of local history: 1717 is the date of the statue, while 1726 is the year the present-day rectory was built.
Another prominent cultural monument is the mill complex at building no. 35, with its technical equipment. It was designated a cultural monument on 26 October 2004. The mill houses a Francis turbine dating from 1926, as well as two milling units with peelers, cleaning machines and a grist mill. The mill complex thus includes both the building and specific technical equipment.
Visits to mill building no. 35 must be arranged in advance with the owner, Hana Maárová. If the mill is an important part of your plans, make this appointment part of your day’s schedule rather than expecting to visit spontaneously.
Choose Your Stay Based on Your Interests
When looking for a hotel in Písečná, it helps to decide first what you would most like to do. For hiking days, use the local routes and the landscape features described here to guide your plans; if cycling is your main interest, consider the named Valdštejn–Šušek route. If you plan to explore the local culture, remember to arrange your mill visit in advance.
