Mladkov between Hiking Trails and Border History

Mladkov combines distinctive hiking trails, border history and a village cultural ensemble. The Jiráskova horská cesta long-distance hiking trail passes through the village, while the Betonová hranice educational trail begins and ends in the centre. There is also the Mladkovské výhledy route with an ascent of 260 metres, the climbing area on the valley slope of the Silent Eagle, and the early Baroque Church of St John the Baptist.

Hiking with Different Focal Points

The Jiráskova horská cesta long-distance hiking trail runs through Mladkov. The route leads from Zemská brána via the mountain hut on Adam and Mladkov to Vysoký kámen and onwards to Suchý vrch. Its course connects several different stops and makes Mladkov part of a longer hike.

For an exploration with a firm connection to the village centre, the Betonová hranice educational trail begins and ends in the centre of Mladkov. A total of 23 information panels cover the construction, purpose, history and fate of the Czechoslovak border fortifications. The route thus combines a walk through the village with a historical theme.

The Mladkovské výhledy route gains 260 metres in elevation over a relatively short section from the starting point. This difference in altitude adds a distinct feature within the short distance; when planning the day, the ascent can be considered a separate part of the hike.

Rocks and a Cycling Route in the Border Region

The Mladkov climbing area consists of gneiss rocks on a valley slope of the Silent Eagle on the outskirts of Mladkov. Mariánská skála is about 12 metres high and has more than 20 routes ranging from medium to very high levels of difficulty. The rock site adds another activity to the hiking trails on the edge of the village.

For cyclists, the Tmavěmodrá PL/CZ cycling route begins at the Czech-Polish border crossing near Mladkov. The border crossing thus serves as the starting point for choosing a route on two wheels in the border region.

Church, Square and Historical Testimonies

The landmark of Mladkov is the early Baroque Church of St John the Baptist, built at the end of the 17th century. It is a single-nave building with a polygonal presbytery and a square tower on the western façade. The west tower features a stone portal dated 1736 and, in a niche, a stone statue of St John the Baptist with a lamb. A statue of St John of Nepomuk stands next to the church, while a Marian column stands in the western part of Mladkov Square.

Another historical marker is the border tree at the tourist crossing point from Mladkov to its Polish neighbours. The ash tree, which has been growing since 1581, marked the border between the estates of Zdeněk Valdštejn and Michael von Tschirnhaus. The site of the border tree is accessible by car; a car park and a tourist rest area have been established in the immediate vicinity.
