Brandýs nad Orlicí

Brandýs nad Orlicí combines a preserved historic townscape with places where history and nature can be discovered in different ways. The town’s heritage zone encompasses the historic town centre and includes the castle, chateau, church and Sokolovna among its significant buildings. At the same time, the original urban structure has been preserved: northeast of the square stand several timber-framed small-town houses from the 19th century. This creates a townscape in which not only individual sights but also the centre’s developed structure deserve attention during a stay.

Historic Centre with Castle and Sokolovna

The origins of Brandýs nad Orlicí Castle date back to the last quarter of the 13th century. What remains is a section of masonry that has been structurally secured and preserved for future generations. The castle is therefore above all a vivid part of the town’s history, whose documented past forms part of the heritage zone.

The Sokolovna Brandýs nad Orlicí holds a special position. It is listed as a protected cultural monument and is housed in a representative town villa dating from 1890. In 1925, the villa was converted in the Romantic historicist style into a Sokolovna with a theatre stage. For your planning, it is important to note that the Sokolovna remains closed. Its cultural and historical importance forms part of the townscape, but this should not be taken to imply that it is open for visits.

Comenius Sites in the Townscape

Brandýs nad Orlicí is also closely associated with Jan Amos Comenius. The town hall contains a memorial hall. In 1623, Comenius completed the work “Labyrint světa a ráj srdce” in Brandýs nad Orlicí. Beside the entrance to the Evangelical Church there is also a casket containing soil from his grave in Naarden. These places highlight different aspects: the memorial hall is located in the town hall, while the casket is associated with the church entrance. Comenius’s legacy can thus be experienced at several points around the town.

Another monument to Jan Amos Comenius stands on a forest path to Klopoty near the swimming pool. The marked route there is suitable for cycling, inline skating and walking. It therefore complements the historic sites with an opportunity to experience the town’s surroundings actively, without separating the cultural connections from the landscape.

The nature labyrinth offers another idea for a visit. The visitor season for the public begins around 1 May and ends on the last weekend of September. This is particularly relevant when planning the timing of a stay, as public access should not be assumed outside this approximate season. The labyrinth is accessible to people with disabilities and has a square layout measuring 35 × 35 metres.
